GE Monitor Top Question.

I've got some friends with a GE Monitor Top that I really want to call my own. Sadly, I haven't got the space and they don't want to part with it either. The model tag says: CK-2-C16, and I believe it's from about 1934 or so.

Unfortunately, the fridge is having some issues. It was running beautifully but now won't run at all. No click, no hum, nothing. The only sign of life is the light, which works perfectly. I am guessing (and this is only a guess) that the cold control is bad because as I turn the knob, there is no click.

Would the cold control be a likely cause of this type of issue? If so, what should I do to repair the refrigerator? I work an an appliance parts store and I can get almost any cold control in current production.

Who knows these refrigerators?

Have you checked the relay yet? If your relay is bad, a Supco RO-81 is a functional replacement.

I had a dead MT once and opened up the control box.  For the life of me, I couldn't determine which two connections to jump in order to bypass the cold control.  Travis is your best resource.  You may want to e-mail him directly about this.

How bad is the wiring on this?  The power to the cabinet is a separate connector, then the power corn runs up to the relay.  The control wire to the cold control has two conductors.  If your wiring isn't rock hard, you may jumper the two wires on the cold control and see if it starts. 

 

If not, the relay is bad or the 110 volt power isn't getting to the relay to begin with.  The relay is mounted between the fins in the back.  It's a pain in the butt to deal with the hardened wire.  The leads are short, you move the outer jacket, and end up breaking the insulation on the inner conductors, etc.

 

You better like these people, cause I don't deal with rewiring other people's pain in the butt fridges unless I am getting paid or I really really adore them.  My email address is here if you need.  We can talk if that would help later.  I don't really want to explain in writing how to repair wiring.

Where's your bellows tube coming if the back of that? If it isn't turning on, someone might have broken it.
