Ge Profile DW, Fix or Replace

When we moved into this house in February of 2011 we replaced all the appliances with GE Profile. The past few time we have run the Dishwasher model PDWT100R10WW when it beeped when finished you open the door and it smelled like something burning. This morning I ran it with nothing inside and had heated dry turned off and same buring smell when done. The smell is not burned food but more plastic or electrical. The filter is clean and there is nothing laying on the bottom. The dishes are still coming out clean but my wife is afraid of the burning smell. Years ago GE had a recall for faulty rinse agent dispenser, but that was years before this model. As it is going on 6 years old do we chalk it up to being disposable and get a new or use our Home Warranty and pay the $85 service fee and get it checked and pay parts to get it fixed. Ideas welcome.

those machines and if that is one, they will still pro rate a replacement for you.
I presume there is nothing melted on the heater.
My D/W is also a 2011 Profile, and was not one of the recalled ones. It has no door handle, and a plastic tub. No problems yet.
GE is very safety conscious. They will likely tell you not to use it until it is diagnosed.
My ingnitors on my range caught fire, and they offered me a new one pro rated, but they were able to repair it, then refunded the entire cost for parts and labor when I sent them the old part that was removed so they could examine it.
Seems I recall you mentioning in one of your posts that you are a Whirlpool employee?

No, Mike isn't a Whrilpool Mike how many loads do you run a week?  It's getting to the point where appliances are only lasting 6-10 years.

Bob, we run it about 4-5 times a week, sometimes more.

No I am not A Whirlpool Emp, retired from Crayola and Hallmark Cards and work at Disney right now. No we checked nothing melted on the heating element on the bottom. We did not get any recall information and nothing on the GE website. We are not going to use it. Found some information online that the burning smell could be the motor dying on it, it will be 6 years old in February 2017.

We went and ordered a new Bosch 800 series tonight, got a rebate on installtion and free delivery when it comes in.

It probably is the main board burning, This is an easy repair, you could even let your HOW pay for it after your deductible.

 

There was NO GE RECALL on these DWs

 

Unless you hated this GE DW I would quickly cancel the Bosch DW, after you have had a Full-Sized American DW you wouldn't be happy with a Bosch, and from your pictures someone in your household really knows how to load a DW.

I so me think on these units, if the motor or board is burning up, the smell would be strongest on the outside or behind the kick plate.

Anyway. These are great dishwashers.
If you can find whether it's the motor or heater or controller..... I'd consider it fixable for now.

Does anything smell behind the kick plate? Underneath?

yOUR GONNA HATE THE BOSCH

You are gonna hate the new bosch... No where near the capacity of the GE and just not the same.. Get it looked at and see if its an easy fix

the control board five years on mine. Lasting 6 to 10 years? Perhaps, if you use the longest cycles and heated wash and dry every time, plus run it every day.
I paid $800 for that machine, yes with a plastic tub, and stainless exterior.
Looks like Mikes dished got cleaned well.
I was asking him if he ever worked for Whirlpool. I have him confused with someone else.

IMO you'll like the Bosch very much--my last apartment had one. The capacity is smaller, yes, but I've seen newer Kenmore and GE models with even smaller racks. The Bosch falls right in the middle and cleans like a champ.

Is the last well made, albeit by Whirlpool, American made DW with a no nonsense food chopped for really dirty dishes, or Bob Loads as they're called around here.
Sorry, GE lost me when they sold to the Chinese, and I LOVED GE Profile appliances.
Whirlpool brands for me where kitchen appliances are concerned.

We had a Bosch in our house in PA. it replaced a Frigidaire TOL Gallery, which replaced a 16 year old Superba, the one in my profile picture. That went through two houses and two kitchen remodels before buring out the motor. the only repair it needed was replace the heater fan and the supply tube in the upper rack. The Frigidair we kept for 5 years and hated it because the upper rack with the plastic tub would always jump off the tracks and fall, thats when we bought the Bosch Integra . If it was not for the $450 rebate I got for buying the Ge Profile DW, range, microwave and fridge, I would have gotten another Bosch here in Florida. The capacity is not a problem, Its about 5 less glasses in the top rack. running it more times a week is ok, sometimes if cooking and baking alot i do twice in a day.

Now you could have a Bosch with 3rd rack for flatware.

An upper tray for flatware? My GE Profile flatware basket is front to rear, and has three detachable sections to make it smaller or larger, plus a small wares basket.
I wouldn't think water laying in a spoon, or a fork near the handle tang is good to aid drying or spotting, and the hot water dulls cutlery.

Mike: I had that same Bosch when I lived in Florida, only with a SS front. I so loved that machine. Very quiet, cleaned like a champ and never had a problem with it. As I said in my Thread about V.I.P Weezer, I would have gotten a Bosch this time around as well, Just wasn't in my budget right now. I still Love my new Whirlpool tho.

My Bosch survived a flood!!!!

My Bosch dishwasher sat under 7ft of flood waters for 2 days and it's running perfectly. I have never found a quieter or better cleaning dishwasher!!!!

also offers flat cutlery top shelves on some new models.
My folks had a low end Bosch Assentia D/W. My dad was suffering from dimensia, and ran it in the hottest cycle half full every day. The board finally cooked after a year of that. It was only 4 years old.

This Tuesday the new Bosch arrived. We wound up getting model SHX68T52UC. We have done 2 loads so far using auto and sanitize options with Finish Quantum Max pods and had great results. It makes no noise at all, you cannot even hear it drain into the disposall.
