I found the model number of 1J362 and a serial number I think of VK21672A on this GE range I picked up last week. Any ideas of the model year? I started to clean it out over the weekend, one of the tabs on the oven element is almost burned thru where it connects to the oven wall, guess I will need to look for one of those as well.

Well, that is a start, I know it has the same buttons we had on our 62 Hotpoint. I need to find the clockworks, right rear burner element and oven element. I have not checked closely for the part numbers on those yet. Here is a closer picture of the clock and controls. I am excited to try to get it cleaned out and working again. I need to figure out some sort of extention cord from the dryer outlet to check the operation once I get the new parts.
I Wonder if it will clash with my Avacado GE Mini washer/dryer set in the garage.....

PARTS

Parts will be easy to find for this baby. The burners never changed and are still available from a parts warehouse. As for the clock, try this guy: Amann appliance. E-mail them at: [email protected] Or call (905) 527-2008. They're in Ontario, Canada. I've seen that clock on '57 models. I'll keep trying for a date for you.

Thank you!

Appreciate the help! I will contact them tomorrow.

As for the left hand side, just two storage drawers, the lower one has 5 slits in it, with two metal dividers, I have no idea what that was for. The left hand burners did not have any drip pans, and the little flat metal thing that blocked drips was not in place, so these drawers are a mess. I am hoping some sanding and gray paint will make it look better. I found the drip plate thing under the oven, still in mint condition with a roasting guide printed on one side.

What a catch, congrats!

"I found the drip plate thing under the oven."

Is that the piece that is visible that sorta looks the like the botom of a gas oven? Does this oven's bottom look like the bottom of today's ovens, (a one-piece oven cavity?)

As a lefty it's hard for me to say, but are the cook-top controls intuitive to a righty with "off" on the right an "HI" on the left? In my head, like a number line, smaller values (less heat) belong to the left....

Does this baby have a rotisserie?

In answer to Toggleswitch,

No, at the bottom of the oven is the element, it has a sheet metal cover over the element, not sure if that was for even heating or safety? If you look above the oven, there is a slot below the burners on the right hand side, and in the open drawer area on the left hand side there is an upper support area for the panel on that side. I found that one in the bottom drawer below the oven. I did not get a picture of it yet.
The buttons are from left to right Hi, 2, 3, Lo, and Wm, then off. That is the only way I have ever seen them set up. What was strange to me was on the left hand side, that is the rear controls, the fronts are on the right. Can't wait to get 220 to it to see the light on and actually get to try it out.
One piece oven with one or two small rust holes? How does an oven rust???? No rotisserie. I am not sure if it even has lights to indicate the oven/element is on at this point. No oven lite either. Time to find some EZ off and go back in time scrubbing... I do kind of like that self cleaning thing upstairs.. .. but guess I am gettin lazy.. I have to figure out how to clean under the burner area on the right, will try the EZ off I guess, right now looks like a fire hazzard!

Possible date correction

Hi, it's me again. I'm sending you an image from 1954. Check out this GE spacemaker and tell me it's not the smaller version of your oven ! The clock and the dials are identical. Again, this image is from 1954 so I might stand to be corrected from my previous statement.

1954

The "Stewardess" Range! I scanned the picture from the brochure for your model, you'll notice there is no light and clock feature standard on this model, that was purchased/added as an option which explains the height. (The light accessory was also available for the washer and dryer that year!) The bake (lower) element in the oven is shielded, but should still be a Calrod unit.

Enjoy your beautiful new range - it should clean up beautifully and the 36" size is nice for smaller spaces too.

That's great!

You all have amazing amounts of info!!
And to think the guy I got it from thought it was a 70 model...
I will keep you updated as I get it cleaned up and find the new parts.

Great-looking range!! Was the clock an optional accessory?

I'd like to see a picture of your Avocado GE mini W/D set too!! Is it an impeller machine like mine?

Austin, thanks! Yes, it is very simular to yours, I am trying to remember the controls on yours, mine has the chrome knobs off the regular GE full size units of the day, but a clear control knob, with only one cycle. I will snap some pictures tomorrow and post them.

Interesting surface unit contol configurations.

R-R F-F

I always assumed GE started the present-day

F-R-R-F config, since they have been No.1 in cooking for decades..

One of the deciding factors when I went from gas to electric cooking was WPs config. of F-R-R-F, but ther "R" controls are a bit raised/higher than the "F" controls, again even more intuitive / user-freindly visually.

OMG...that Spacemaker oven was the one I grew up with. It didn't have the lamp/timer on it (interesting to see that it was optional--it was always puzzling why the bake selector had a "timed bake" setting when there was no timer. My parents bought it used in about 1964 or so, I'd guess, and it made several moves. It fit perfectly in our kitchen, right next to the dishwasher so you could walk down the stairs (a 30" stove would be too wide).

My dad renovated it in about 1975 (new top elements and oven thermostat)--learned how to do it from him. In about 1978, we had the house for sale (again, with the perfectly proportioned stove which was critical to the kitchen) when the oven element went out...it was a mad panic to find the correct oven element so we wouldn't have to buy a new one.

Nothing like a pushbutton GE stove to make good rice...HI until it boiled, LO for 15 minutes.

Washable,

I guess when stuff dripped on it, you could unplug it and wash it off, without having to clean the whole oven. The cover on mine has some rusted "drip" marks, wonder what they were cooking?!?! Yikes... talk about indigestion..
