My sturdy little GE toast 'n broil TOAST-R-OVEN is dying. Does anyone know of something with a similar footprint (15.5" by 8.5") for my tiny nyc kitchen with no counterspace? Yes, it belonged to my parents in the 70s or 80s and has been providing yummy toasted cheese since the early 90s! I'm currently looking at some GE Toast R Ovens on ebay, but really not sure how long they'd last if I did get them. Anyone know of someone in NYC who might fix mine? At the moment it only has heating sources working on the bottom and can't quite toast a piece of frozen bread.

You might be able to find replacement calrod elements for the top of the oven on Ebay. Those ovens show up quite often on Ebay but for pretty big money. I've had numerous of them sell on there, but I get mine at thrift stores for about $5-10. Don't throw it out because as soon as you do you're going to find another one to pirate the parts off.

Pics!

These aren't really complicated little machines. Perhaps a do-it-yourself repair may be in order. I know on mine, the temp-selecter / toast lever got gummed up and will require some extensive cleaning. As soon as I un-box it I'll have to do that.

Those things never die........I had one for twenty years until I wanted to "update" I think you might like the DeLongi that Macy's sells, It is compact and stylish. I am sure there are some fix-it shops still out there in the five boroughs. Good Luck

Thanks for all the info. It's study for sure!

I bet it is simply the "calrod" elements. The only heating element that works is the one on the bottem. This morning I made toast by turning the bread over half way through ; ).

From what I can tell the model # is A4T131B. Does that sound right? There's also 15192 scratched on the underside, but perhaps that was marked by whoever repaired it when my parents passed it my way.

There used to be a repair service I used for TV's that I trusted about ten years ago in Manhattan but unless someone can actually recommend the fix-it shop, I'd be loathe to use them. Especially on something so small.

Maybe I can con one of my friends into helping me figure it out. (My dad taught me to paint and use a hammer and saw, but I'm afraid I fell in to the girl category when it came to electronics and mechanics!)

Your request about who to go to for repair

Hello. I've used a wonderful repair guy in NYC (no less! and I live in Wisconsin!) He has a web site - ToasterCentral.com

It's a real trip to wander through his site - he has great pictures of toasters, waffle irons, etc that he repairs and also sells. His name is John Sheafe and his phone number is: 212 744-3773

I think if he can't do it he'll know who can in your area.

Ciao,

jim

I think I've seen John before, since he sell Toasters at the Flea Market around the corner from me. I'll definately stop by and talk to him!

NYC Repair Guy

Hi siegell,

Well, tell John I said hello when you do see him. I can't kmagine a Manhattan apartment serving as a toaster warehouse/repair shop and living quarters!
