I am in the market for a new electric clothes dryer, my faithful 22 year old Kenmore (Whirlpool) has given up the ghost and died, the obsolete and failed electronic control board being the culprit.

Mind you, I am looking for a basic model, I do not need (nor desire) the so-called "steam feature", the "wrinkle guard" feature is a must.

Any and all Korean brands are out of the question.

Due to my recent bad experiences with a Whirlpool fridge and freezer, I'm hesitant on selecting that brand.

Speed Queen was a consideration, until I've read where the brand is notorious for scorching fabrics.

One of the things Whirlpool makes GREAT is a dryer... especially the standard 29" dryers...Even if you swear off the brand entirely because of bad experiences with other appliances... you really can't go wrong with one of the standard dryers with the lint screen on top.. (as long as your vent run is clean) as with any dryer...I bought mine in 2019...more of a BOL or a step up from that model...it has wrinkle shield...auto dry, all that...Electric not gas and it hasn't missed a beat. And remember, all of the other brands whirlpool owns.. .Maytag, Amana, etc...so if you see a dryer with a lint screen in the top, it's a Whirlpool built machine...And I could be wrong, but I don't think they've changed the design at all..

Top filter dryer is the only dryer I recommend to customers that have the room for them. Design has not changed since the mid 60's. Weak spot is the plastic stem timer.Wider drum causes better tumbling. If your Kenmore was a 27 inch dryer with the lint screen in the door, you will notice faster, less wrinkled clothing.BOL Amana dryer has 30 min continous wrinkle guard that tumbles in air the whole time. Other wrinkle guards tumble once every 5 min,

My deceased dryer has it's lint filter in the lower section of the door opening, the dryer has always performed flawlessly.

I used to disassemble it completely every 6 years or so to clean all the trapped lint out and to replace normal wear parts such as the belt, rollers, etc.

Being a retired firefighter, I've been to several building fires where the dryer and/or venting excessive lint buildup was the cause.

I think I will go with another Whirlpool product, avoiding an Amana (Whirlpool's bargain brand) because of it's wrinkle guard operation.

Thanks!

Best new clothes dryers

I would definitely agree you can't beat a 29 inch whirlpool belt dryer, however, they're 27 inch dryers are quite good as well.

GE dryers of recent are just junk. They're very difficult to service and very cheaply made, Electrolux dryers also are to be avoided Too many problems.

Samsung and LG are just copies of the 27 inch whirlpool machine, but much more cheaply built the metal is incredibly thin.

Speed Queen builds a great dryer. It's very solid. You can stand on it for example unlike a 29 inch whirlpool or other brands However the cost is pretty high so it may not be in your budget

Hi Jeff , why aren't you fixing your 22-year-old whirlpool dryer that's nothing for a 27 inch whirlpool dryer, usually the control boards just have a bad solder joint on them. If you can't fix the board, you can easily get one from core centric or even buy a used one on eBay.
