GE Washer made approx 1979 makes very loud grinding noise during agitation. No sound during spin cycle. Washes clothes well.
Sound occurs immediately when starting wash, stops during spin cycle, then starts again after water is added (during agitation) The grinding sound is somewhat constantly, like a blender on crush cycle.
I've turned the plastic agitator myself = no sound, turns smooth.
I've turned the metal drum myself = no sounds, very smooth turning
Model # MMA5669MALAD
Serial # DF15981 6?
I opened the back and listened for noise- unable to decide if the noise if coming from the motor, the transmission or the mount. Looking at the unit from the front, the noise sounds coming from the bottom back. Looking from the right side, noise seems to come from back.
The unit was purchased for about $35, so I'm not prepared to replace the Motor, Transmission or other expensive parts.
Since the machine works well during the spin cycle, I assume the motor is not the issue.
Is it the transmission that causes the system to agitate?
