Hi Louis,

I also asked this in the other compressor you have listed in the shopper's square post. I have a 1956 GE combination (bottom freezer) and a '64 GE Americana. On both, the compressor "runs" but doesn't cool. On the '56, you can hear fluid going through coils in the freezer, but no cooling.

I really need to just send these to David and let him work his magic-lol.

These compressors are much newer than the '56 GE. And at 1/4 HP, I don't think they would be powerful enough for the Americana. But I am no expert. And David, yeah, the man is a genius.

Thank you, Louis, for the reply. I have another '56 whose compressor looks like it was replaced in 1970. I'll have to check the tag to see what number it is.

As for the Americana, John L mentioned that a newer, more efficient compressor should work in it and do just fine.

Swapping compressors is out of our expertise, so the fridges would have to be sent somewhere. Unless someone wants to come to Florida for a few days and work on them!

I had a watch on this item back when a refrigeration guy offered to take a look at my '57 Combination after its compressor suffered an internal failure.  Even with shipping it's still a good deal.

 

I remember seeing verbiage on a tag that advised on charge levels based on whether the refrigerator was older or newer than, I think, 1976, so the subject compressor isn't '50s vintage, but according to David, who shared the link to the auction with me, it would work on my '57.

 

The guy never followed up with me, so the '57 is still sitting here waiting.

My turquoise '56 combo doesn't have its tag anymore, but here's a picture of the tag that's on the yellow '56. A date of 5-13-70 is written on the tag, so I'm assuming that's the date of installation. The lines to the compressor stick a ways out so the fridge would have to be several inches away from the wall to accommodate, whereas the blue could fit fairly flush.

WR87X29, that is a P-36 Compressor. Is there a thread for this refrigerator? If not, you should start one.

I don't think I've mentioned the yellow refrigerator much, if at all. I went through my pictures and the only ones I found were the one from the ad, and one from the day it arrived. Has the turquoise interior, and last I checked, it works fine. It's currently unplugged as it needs a new gasket and the shed we have it in has no a/c, so it probably gets well over 100 degrees in there in the summertime.

Since it was raining today and cooler, I plugged it in and it cooled just fine. However, the condenser coils and the copper tubing were extremely hot to the touch. Is that normal? I have a '55 that is running, and the coils and compressor were warm, but not anywhere close to the temps of the yellow '56.
