Last Night a friend of mine gave me a near mint GE toaster oven, (the kind where the door pops open and the tray slides out when the toast is done),however the thermostat is way off...if I slide the indicator to anything below 475 degrees the elements will come on for about 30 seconds or so then shut off, at 475 it heats to 350 and at 550 (actually a little beyond that) it heats to 425 max (I tested it with an oven thermometer), also I noticed when it is heating the elements don't stay on continuously, they cycle on and off until the temperature is reached, then they will cycle on and off as normal to maintain temp. Does anyone know of a way to adjust/calibrate the thermostat? It would be a huge shame to have to discard a vintage item that is cosmetically mint...thanks

My guess would be

that the thermostat has come loose and is no longer making contact with the oven cavity.

I'd suggest you take the oven apart (careful, I've cut myself on the sharp metal edges before) and, with the cord unplugged, check whether the thermostat has come loose.

They're a pretty standard item and even if it is bad, not hard to get a replacement for.
