German Persil

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Two companies own the rights to the "Persil" brand. Henkel in Germany (Europe,South America and several other parts of the world), and Unilever in the UK (formally Lever Bros., sold in the UK and other parts of former "Empire"). Over the years each company has tried to buy out the other, but neither side wishes to give in, so that is that.

The story of how both a German company and a British one came to own the same brand is a long one, and involves twists/turns and even Nazi Germany IIRC.

Henkel Persil is not sold in the United States outside of Miele dealers (Miele imports and distributes the line along with other Henkel products). UK Persil is not sold in North America period, though many British expat online stores will ship.

Further to Persil in the Empire

Persil is known as OMO in Australia, and is manufactured by Unilever.

OMOmatic was the first HE detergent in AU introduced in the late 1970's early 1980's.

Unilever Persil is in NZ but the formulation is Identical to our OMO.

We are using the UK version of Persil.

Martin:

Yes you can use Persil in Kenmore toploader. We have a Whirlpool top loader and we use about 25-30ml of the liquid or 1 "bio ball" full of Persil powder for each load. And that's for a load of dirty dog beds. You may wish to use less for less dirty clothing.

Henkel invented Persil and soon after it launched in Germany they licensed it to a few small companies in Europe (Crossfields in the UK) and other territories, as they didn't have Henkel companies in those countries at the time to sell their products themselves.

These companies that had licensed the Persil name from Henkel were soon taken over by Unilever and that's how Unilever came to share the brand with Henkel. Unilever and Henkel eventually reached an agreement that they would both own the brand in their respective territories. Although initially the same product, Henkel and Unilever Persil are now the same in name only. :-)

Launderess, does this mean . . .

that you use your Persil Sentitiv Megapearls on colors? I am curious to see how it works, but I'm afraid to try it. Since I still have a large quantity of Megapearls Color I will continue to use that. Just curious, though.... how do your colors come out?

I have a lot of dark pants and shirts that I wear to work and church, and I really don't want to fade them. Please advise....

Also. . . .

Do you use STPP in every load, or just the detergent alone? Just curious. I tend to always use STPP with the whites, and oftentimes on loads of dark colors that contain my dress shirts with ring-around-the-collar. Since I only use luke-warm water in that load, I like to give the wash water a little boost.

No, only use the Persil on whites/lights that are colourfast which are usually washed all together. For colours I use a stash of commercial European detergent that contains no OBAs. Also have several bottles of Persil "FEWA" (aka Black Magic), though the cheap hair dye scent puts me off, so those bottles will last a long time. Finally have a large bottle of Cheer Free & Clear liquid have been trying to finish up. Use it mainly for darks/coloured loads like jeans and shmate stuff I wear around the house and when cleaning. Cheer liquid can be a bit sudsy, but found adding some grated soap keeps the sudsing down.

Use STPP mainly with whites because there is a tendency in our household to run around with shoes off and socks on. This leads to socks with lots of ground in dust/dirt that I find STPP is great for removing. Other than that have weaned myself away from adding STPP to every load. Both Tide Proline and the European detergents clean well enough including collars/cuffs that have found can eliminate adding STPP to most loads.
