Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

My mom's best friend had that dryer paired with a 1955 Unimatic. I pushed that auto dry button many a time. They were replaced with a Poppy Custom Deluxe 1/18 pair.

There is a vintage washing machine (Maytag?)off to left of Westinghouse dryer, you can just make a bit of it out in pictures. However no washer is listed thus far with this estate auction. Wonder if unit is spoken for somehow.

While there isn't a modern washing machine in this auction there is a Maytag dryer.

Obviously couple thus upgraded in that area. Wonder if they kept that older washing machine going all these years?

"Those Westinghouse dryers are practically an oven with a spinning drum."

Since these dryers ran on either 120v or 240v one was some what tempted early on in collecting days to nab one to see what there was. I mean if it broiled laundry dry at 220v maybe 120v was just slightly cooler? *LOL*

Any 240v dryer that’s operated on 120v will certainly be much gentler on clothes, the 1956 Whirlpool Imperial dryer had a gentle and regular fabric guide that when selected to gentle, it would only operate on 120v for extra low drying temperatures to give you more flexibility in drying temperatures.

Only thing though is it will take several hours to dry a load of clothes on 120v vs 240v, it will be gentler on certain clothes and the heating element however, it will put more mileage on the rollers, belt(s), tensioner and any other mechanical part for the drum drive and such.

That, too. It’s funny when people complain that the “HOH dryers run hotter than modern dryers” but from my experience after I replaced the cycling and high limit thermostat, they are very gentle even more so if you only put a 120F low heat thermostat in. When the Maytag dryer I use on a daily basis is put on low heat, the front of the drum is warm to the touch (if you open the door when the heating element cycles off) so it really does ‘surround clothes with a soft even circle of heat for gentle drying, no hotspots that can damage fabrics”.

I have never heard of anybody complaining that HOH dryers ran hot UNLESS they were overloaded and fabrics were jammed against the front of the drum. If the WH dryers were not used on the auto bake cycle where the temperature was allowed to soar to terminate the cycle, they could dry with safety and sanity and even cool off the last few minutes of the cycle.

A few people claimed they ran hotter than modern dryers in a thread I created 6 years ago called “how gentle are Maytag HOH dryers on the clothes”.

Yes, they did!

"Since there's only one operating thermostat they tend to run much hotter than modern dryers, and the clothing at the front of the drum can be subject to very high temperatures if it brushes against the front.

Overall operating temperatures will reach 150 to 160° Once the clothing is dry, clothing that hits the front of the drum can easily contact surfaces over 200° in temperature in a normal operating HOH dryer.

The trick to trying to keep clothing safe in an HOH dryer is to use the time cycle and set the timer so the clothing does not dry completely or use the damp dry cycle on the electronic ones and remove the clothing if you're worried about excessive temperatures."

Here’s one thing I’ll note though, since I mostly use the lower temperature setting on my customized Maytag dryer, the front of the drum isn’t nearly as hot towards the end of the cycle and probably is somewhere in the 120F-130F-140F range before it reaches the cool down. The Maytag DG306 I have is even more gentle, the front of the drum is a little on the hot side but as the cycle progresses, the cooler and cooler it becomes (same with the front of the cabinet since the shroud is at the very front of the inside of the cabinet), even monitored it when I installed the low heat 120F cycling thermostat just be sure everything was working correctly. The front of the drum when empty for testing purposes was somewhat hot to the touch, but not burning hot tot he touch. Easily one of the gentlest dryers I’ve ever used, shirts I bought in 2020 with vinyl decals didn’t show any signs of cracking after being dried in that dryer for 6 months.
