Gas Lanterns.
There are a number of houses in our neighborhood that have them. They have all been installed when the houses were built as they are all mounted on both sides of the front door and you don't see any pipes. I really love the way they look and always wondered what it would cost them to run. $11.00 a month sure sounds reasonable to me but I also have a recessed front door and given where I would want them it would likely be a nightmare to install so the lines would be hidden. It's mostly brick so I think they would look wonderful. But would likely cost a fortune to get them installed with the pipes hidden. I would want them on the wall on either side of the front door.
I've tried the flicker bulbs out there but they don't throw enough light and are just not the same.
The neighborhood my Mom lives in is similar to Bob's with every house having the yard lamp a certain distance from the road and the driveway only ours were all Mercury Vapor lamps whatever the hell that is. The house was built in '69 and every house still has them and they are all still working. It's a requirement for the neighborhood. When I was a kid we used to say our street looked like a runway with all the lights. They are all identical and it really does add a nice touch to the neighborhood. I remember my Dad putting a piece of tape over the light switch in the house so we wouldn't accidentally turn it off. They have an electric eye on them so they come on at dark and off at dawn. I was home in late April and we had a little snow over night. I hadn't seen snow in a while so I took a couple of pictures. You can see those lights and they are pretty bright.
