Gold Rimmed Glasses in the Dishwasher

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

In general I would not, but if you must.......

low heat & short cycle, unheated dry.

And no touchie when hot or warm. Let cool completely before removing from machine.

Gold is a soft metal to start with and more-so when heated.

I would say not

Call me paranoid, but I recall seeing too many vintage glasses destroyed by dishwasher detergent over the years. If the glasses are hierlooms or have great sentimental value, better play it safe than sorry.

Under certain circumstances perhaps. Like you use them one and only once and dishwasherize them only once every 10 years then if you're fortunate that by the time you've reached the stage in life where you're deciding which size of Depends to buy you also probably won't be able to see that the gold just aint as shiny as it used to be if it's there at all. LOL

I'm copyrighting the term "dishwasherize" so anyone wants to use it in future will have to forward me a Canadian dollar or a Euro on account of the US dollars present decline.

While I HATE to say it...

....and HATE to do it, some things HAVE to be washed by hand! The gold is an overlay or hand painted on, and there is no protectant on top of it, so it would surely come off. It may not come off after the first washing, but you would surely notice the wear. I'll never forget a Versace ad that had his beautiful plates and stemware in the dishwasher. The glasses are so fragile that all you have to do is look at them and the stems break off! (I have a service for 12, so I know) And they certainly CAN NOT be machine washed. Mark

I have washed gold rimmed glasses and not had a problem. But thats using Cascade or Electrosol with Enzymes. Chlorine based detergents like Electrosol powder or Sunlight will take off the gold. Thats with my experience. If in doubt wash by hand.

Shocking, but...........

I totally agree with dear Toggle about never ever touching/moving them while hot. That said, I do have some gold rimmed pieces that do get a trio to Cascade Land every so often. I just run it late, and let them rest in the machine overnight.

Thanks. We have a lot of Spode Christmas Tree dishes and glassware that we use during the Christmas season for everyday dishes and glasses. The glasses are gold rimmed, and I was just curious. I guess I'll err on the side of caution. I have to hand wash the Calphalon anyway.
