My mother has this machine. I believe this is the belt drive model still and sounds like that's what is wrong with it. A belt issue. Should be a good machine.

It sounds like the lid switch or the plunger for it. It'll fill but no motor function. The lid switch internal fuses are good as it will fill but the plunger isn't activating it. There is a retrofit kit that includes a new lidswitch and longer, green colored plunger. This is to help with a problem that the Herrin built Atlantis platform washers can have where the lid itself can be slightly bent where it should make contact with the plunger. It's called "oil canning" and can be caused by setting sonething too heavy on the lid such as someone climbing in it...

I've had a couple of those washers come through the shop. They're not bad, huge capacity, fairly quiet, but I sure wouldn't pay $40.00 for one with issues.

I had one of those for almost three months. It was a good machine overall, but the agitator has a design flaw. The fins are semi detached to make them flexible, but the clearance between the fin and the baseplate is too thin and creates a pinch point. During spin/drain, as the water and clothes pull away from the agitator towards the tub, you can see garment clothespinned underneath the fin. I noticed holes forming in my bath towels and this was determined to be the reason. Otherwise, it is not a bad machine.
I sent mine packing, though.
