Grandma's Vacuum Cleaner!

Brings back memories of the hours spent vacuuming the front parlor at grandma's house. After I finished dusting/polishing and cleaing the mirrors. Forced child labour, that's what was. Should have called Protective Services! *LOL*

That looks like a Marquis or Legacy...approx. 1987 if memory serves. I always thought the 2-button switch was cool.

Old Hoovers

I haven't been blessed with finding an old Hoover yet. A couple of years ago there was an old black bag Hoover Junior at the flea market,,,but darn it, was a UK model so I didn't take it. No point in having it if I can't plug it in
Rigtt now there's an Elux similar to that pic above at the thrift shop for 25, but it's looking a bit tattered. I think I'd rather have one of the old sled ones that looks more like a rocket or streamlined locomotive.

Dust before or after vacuuming? (Hoover-ing) I can see the logic in both.

Maybe with a regular vacuum cleaner , after..

and with a central vac that spits the dust out its heiney to somewhere outdoors.... before?

Granny's vacuum

That model is similar to the one MY Granny replaced her old Electrolux with the runners and the bag ejector mechanism with. She bought the Diamond Jubilee model.

And she WAS a "young granny". My family had kids really young. I did the math and figured out she had my Mom when she was 16. My Dad's Mom had my Dad when she was 18. And I came along when my parents were 20 and 21. So when I was growing up, nobody was really "old". Even got to meet my Great-Grandmother on Dad's side when she was young enough to be active and I was old enough (10) to remember her.

Grandma's Vacuum

I still use this 1922 Premier Duplex every time I clean my house. It belonged to my grandmother. It does a great job. Dust after vacuuming with this one of course.

Hi Pete, Mom got it after grandma bought a Kenmore Imperial upright in the late 1940's. The Premier went to the attic after mom got a Eureka for her green and gold shag carpet in 1972.
I found the Premier when I cleaned out and sold my parents house in 1997. I restored it in 1998,and use it as my regular vacuum.My 1980's Eureka is now used for the basement.

I cringe now when I think of those two toned shag carpets. Green/Yellow, Red/Orange...Blue/Green..etc..must have been some mass hypnosis experiment going on cause they were so cool at the time.

Is that the original bag, or did you make or have the bag made? That's one of the things that keep me away from vintage uprights...I am so NOT a fan of original cloth bags.

I'll bet it wouldn't be hard to jury rig an old machine like that for paper bags by using a small piece of PVC pipe or elbow inside the cloth bag friction fitted into the opening so you could attache a long necked bag onto it in exactly the same way as many of the Sears/GE etc soft bagged uprights worked.

Premier dirt bag

The bag was replaced a few times. When I was a kid it had a black bag,with silver letters. It was not the original bag even then. I think it said "General Electric" on it. It was converted to a purple bag that used paper bags sometime before it went to the attic in 1972. That bag was very thin,and had holes in it where it rubbed on the handle. I purchased the tan bag that it on it now,in 1998 when I restored the vacuum. I do not have pets,so it does not get that full or dirty. I empty the bag outside,then vacuum the inside of the bag with the shop vac in the garage. I only have to do this a couple times per year,so it isn't a big deal at all.
I am planning to put this old vacuum in the trunk before I drive to the convention this Summer,just so Austin can get to play with it at Gregs house. Anyone who is going to the convention will get to see it then.

Rick: Really COOL Premiere vacuum!!You did a beautiful job restoring it.Must be a real pleasure to use.Somehow I find older machines like that to be better to use.
I think the "dust after you vacuum" came about from the days of the single layer cloth bags and no "HEPA" filters.These days with vacs with more modern filters its not neccesary.I have had no problems with that-I find the dust rag or feather duster spreads more dust than a vac.And those devices spread it so you breathe it.-also I hate the blower "air hoses" we have here at work-other folks use them to blow dust out of the transmitters-and it lingers in the air for hours causing you to cough and sneaze.And a work partner on the other side of the transmitter cabinet blows the dust from his side into yours(i just cleaned with a vacuum) and into your face.The air hose outside works for cleaning the reusable air filters in some of the xmitters.Just use my Royal tank vacuum-and it fits in my locker!!!Makes tx pm more pleasant.
