I noticed last night when removing the agitator from the maytag wringer washer to drain the water there was grease around the drive post that is in the bottom of the tub. I have not noticed this before. Does this mean that the seal is broken. Thank you for any information.

According to the Maytag wringer manual that I have, they recommend greasing the drive post(with Vaseline) frequently and removing the agitator for inspection after each use. Hope this helps.

Grease
When posting the mesage about the grease on the drive post it was a serious question. There was never any grease before because I always dry the inside of the machine out. It appears that the grease is coming from the base of where the post goes into the housing. Thanks for the information.

I was serious in answering your question. Yes, it may mean that the seal is broken, but I've noticed residual grease in that area on many similar washers. Have you looked inside the agitator column where you might find a big ol wad of leftover lubricant??
FWIW my old GE "Spacemaker" washing machine advised removing the agitator now and then and applying a bit of "grease" (GE stated Vaseline was fine), to the post. Have seen cans of Maytag "Wringer Grease" on eBay,and often wondered what the stuff was for, now I know.

Seriously, a leaking transmission is no fun regardless of where it leaks.
I wonder though if what you are seeing is just washer gunk. I mean I have pulled a fair amount of agitators and there can be a build up of washer debri and fabric softener gunk and it looks like grease.
I hope for you that that is all this is.
