Not particularly special, but a friend advised to use Del Monte seasoned green beans and Golden Mushroom soup.  Seems the only seasoned variety I find on the market now is with onion, red pepper, and garlic.

Mike, you can add one of those small jars of artichoke in oil, break up the artichokes and drain them on paper towel add them to the traditional recipe and carry on as usual. The adults will enjoy it, you might make a second traditional one if you will have kids at the table. Happy Thanksgiving to You as well. Art

A can of--

drained sliced water chestnuts and a teaspoon of reduced sodium (green label) Kikkoman.

If using canned green beans, get the no added salt variety. The mushroom soup and the canned fried onions are both salty enough.

I've prepared this one several times and it's always turned out well.  It is taken from 'Magic' - The Cookbook of the Junior League of Birmingham, AL.

French String Bean Casserole

2 (10 ounce) packages frozen French-style green beans, cooked and drained

1 (16 ounce) can bean sprouts, drained

1 (8 ounce) can water chestnuts, drained and sliced

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 stick butter

2 tablespoons flour

1-1/4 teaspoons salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

Cayenne pepper to taste

1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 pint whipping cream

1/2 cup slivered almonds

Preheat oven to 425 deg.  In a buttered 2-quart baking dish, layer beans, bean sprouts, and water chestnuts; sprinkle with cheese.  Repeat layers.  Melt butter, add flour and seasonings.  Gradually add cream and cook until thick, stirring constantly.  Pour sauce over beans.  Sprinkle with almonds.  Bake 20-30 minutes or until bubbly.  Casserole may be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated before baking.
