CraigsList contact links are MailTo links.  A MailTo link (similar to a website URL) opens the default mail client program on the computer and prefills the TO address based on what's coded in the link (CraigsList links are also coded with a message subject).  If a mail client (Outlook Express, Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudora, Windows Live Mail, etc.) is not set up on the computer, then the MailTo link does not work ... the computer has no working program associated with opening the link (instead you get a prompt to set up a mail program).  People run into this situation nowadays because so many use only web-based mail instead of a proper mail client program.  MailTo links don't work with webmail services, there's no way for the link to be coded with what is the specific webmail service of *every* individual who views the ad.  A way around it is copy/paste the relevant info (TO address and SUBJECT) from the link into a message composition at your mail service.

The format of a typical link is
mailto:[email protected]?subject=blah-blah-blah-blah

The contact e-mail address is the part between mailto: and ?subject
[email protected] in this example.

The subject is the blah-blah-blah-blah part following ?subject= ... which actually is the TITLE of the ad as a clickable URL ... so simply use the ad title as your message subject.
