So I'm looking at Ebay and find there are a few Elna Supermatics and or manuals for sale. Seems they're all being bid on as well. Naturally there is a couple of sewing machine collector clubs I must resist, I must resist.
So it seems my machine was built somewheres 1952-1956. The first sewing machine to use interchangeable cams.

Beautiful machine! I knew it was an Elna because a friend of mine brought me one in June when he came for the convention. We had seen them at an estate sale of a sewing machine collector and he found it a couple weeks later at a local thrift store. There were two Supermatics, numerous other Elna models, 28 Singer Featherweights - yes, 28. I only bought one, a 1933 221. Many, many other machines of different brands, but oddly, no Bernina. I found a couple of Bernina accessory parts, but no machines. All had been serviced by the lady who collected them. I found lots of service literature, parts, a featherweight folding table, too much to list ;-) It was a very fun sale.

How many machines do you then Greg? A few months ago at the flea market one of the sellers had a Necci <sp> that I kept wandering back over to look at without looking interested LOL. What I liked about it was the almost feminine sensual curves of the machine, like it was sculpted, a real nice piece of modern industrial design I thought. Heck I should have bought it.

My wife got the Supermatic because during the mid 70's her mother updated to a newer Elna. She then gave the Supermatic to my wife when we married. My MIL always said the older Elna was much nicer to use than the newer one!

I have five, including 2 Necchi machines, both from mid-50's with zigzag. There's also the Featherweight, a Bernina 930 and the Elna Supermatic.

My mother had a Necchi of the same vintage--the book looks so similar (kind of stilted translation). She switched about 10 years ago to a Bernina.

This is a real classic sewing machine---excellently engineered.

Has anyone looked at the prices of the new computerized sewing machines, whoa, we're talking thousands of dollars. They're amazing pieces of machinery though. You can download patterns,crests, embroideries etc from the internet and put them in the machines memory to stitch away automatically. If only my gran were still here, she'd harummph it all. Well I shouldn't say that, she might have just been the complete opposite and bought in.

My aunt had a similar or perhaps the same model. I remember the knee control lever. I saw it for the first time when I was ten or so. Until then I had only seen sewing machines with foot pedals.
