a stupid question
There are buttons next to the door handle. What is the dial on the bottom for? Do you have to turn it to start the DW? When I was young I always wondered about that and still do.

What is the dial on the bottom for?
The dial just shows in what portion the dishwasher is running..ie prewash, wash, rinse, dry. It is not necessary to turn the dial for under normal circumstances.
The 15 series boasted "Instant Start" which meant that once a button is pressed, the motor would come on and it would start filling immediately. One could advance the timer manually to the "dry" portion if you wanted to warm your plates since the 15 series didn't have a special button for that.
The Superba model had a rapid advance timer so after the Rinse and Hold and Utility Utensil cycle, the rapid timer would advance it to the proper place within a minute or so rather than waiting for the regular timer to advance step by step.
The Imperial and Custom models weren't equipped with the rapid advance timer, so one could just turn the timer to "OFF" after the Rinse and Hold if they didn't want to wait for the timer to do it.

Let's not forget that...
The Superba also had the 180 Degree Sani Cycle and the in sump heater which heated the water in the wash portions of the cycles using 700 watts of power and heated the sani rinse water with 1400 watts. I loved hearing that great sizzling sound when it hit the final rinse! The Superba also came standard with the rinse agent dispenser.We got ours in 1966 and it ran well into the 90's and was tossed to the crusher in running condition!(not by us, though)

Definitely a great find. As long as it has a good hot water supply it will clean like crazy.Especially with today's detergent formulations. I think you can even sneak in a newer 18-23 style lower rack in it since there is a deep recess in the door panel. Might get more water to the top!
One thing for sure though, That tank should be insulated with a nice blanket of fiberglass to hold down the noise as well as keep the heat in.
I have often suggested that prior to covcering the tank and using it as a daily driver, to get some undercoating spray at an auto parts store and to spray the whole tank to take some of the "ring" out of the steel. It will deaden some of the noise. I would run the plate warm portion of the cycle a few times to really cure the spray and get rid of the smell of it, then cover it with the fiberglas. Then install it and enjoy it!
