Guys at work know of my Hobby

last thread for today.

I told the peeps I work with of my hobby and passed my phone around the canteen to look at Hottie pics and my LARGE collection of detergents LOL. ok large to normal folk anyways.

Quite a few people were very interested actually and I dont feel any shame in it like I used to. I did my little, Dont buy a new machine, only if its Miele pitch to them hehe.
And as a bonus, some of the ladys who know what machine they have told me.I made appropriate comments on eachone and they mostly agreed. Zanussis and Hotpoints came out tops.

Not one Indesit thank god..... but my best work mate has the ?69 Beko. He nearly got a slap as he only uses it on prog 8 Quick wash. however his uniform is always clean so whatever suits him.

I did bring up the gay thing with them and most agreed it is not a gay thing although they think Im "weird" or its a "bizzarre" hobby and there are quite a few judgemantal people I work with.

I will post how the conversation of my hobby came up at a later date. at the library as usual GRRRR! and so much to do while im at a computer.

I have to say I haven't been that brave. My family knows and has a tendency to take the piss out of me. Especially as I used to get excited as a toddler when I saw a washing machine spin.

I've casually asked people what makes they have but haven't gone any further.

Good on you though Nick, it's nothing to be ashamed of.

They know about it at work for me-actually some of the guys here know what I am looking up when they see the Frigidiare washer on the site homepage doing its thing.They say--he's looking up that washing machine thing again"Then they would ask me what appliances they should get-esp vacuums.I even repaired an Oreck vacuum for one of the guys here they brought in.

I usually don't want to speak about this passione but if it goes out... well no shame to admit that! At the end there's none I know that shame speaking aobout his/her passione why should I do it myself?

Then I'm taking the advantage of that working for my "tesi"... think that at the end there will be a conference either where I will be asked to explane my work...

And over all... that's my blog... with my faboulous Italian friends we speak almost everyday of this...

I've discussed washing machines at work. Especially back before we bought our Whirlpool TOL set. I was obsessing over what type make, model to buy. So I was asking everyone I came in contact with what type of washer they owned. BTW, the most recommended sets back then(1993) were Whirlpool and Kenmore.
But I did get a bunch of "A washer is a washer, isn't it?" type responses.
Now about a year ago when I started learning more about FL machines, I asked around again. Nobody didn't say anything about all of this. I usually do my own house repair work, fix our cars myself, etc. so I think most people thought of this as just a part of being "handy" around the house.

I've found it's actually hip to be into laundry culture these days!

I think it's because the newer machines are different, and irresistable to anyone who sees them in the stores.

I haven't "taken the plunge", HE-wise yet, and still love my ancient Whirlpool, but, like a lot of people, I'm watching the market carefully for an FL with a heater that is affordable, that I think I'll be happy with long-term.

I have the vacuum bug as well, and, if anything, I believe a lot of guys find that somewhat flakier. I have a Kenmore Iridium canister, and I guess it's hard for a lot of people to get as excited as I do about vacuuming!

When we had our house up for sale it was interesting to see prospective buyers reaction when they went into my room that had all my vacs and other old vintage appliances. Most didn't say anything but there were a few guys who seemed quite intrigued and were looking at the stuff. One younger guy who came by with his wife was quite taken by my old Amana Radarange in the kitchen wanting to know if it still worked and how cool it was.

My Friends know

My computer used to be in a closet in the dining room. Often, when friends were over I would show them pictures from the sight or play clips for them to watch. Never a week goes by that I don't send the link to someone.
No one could really believed a complete stranger would come from California, to be a guest in my home and we would connect for merely clean reasons. I had to have a house full over to see it in person.
The washer guys are the coolest. It is sad, for me, the local guys are anti getting together. I have to import my washer connections.

Yesterday, I sent the POD

to a straight friend in Sydney, Australia.

He hadn't belived me when I told him that Dame Edna had done a Whirlpool washer print ad back in the day, so I was glad to show him the ad.

He's not into appliances as such, but he does like to cook, and is a pretty good cook at that.

He thought my interest was "odd," but when I explained it in the context of being a completely domestic being and that appliances (generally) move and make noise, (as opposed to furniture,) he said "oh, that makes sense."

As for my family....I am very lucky, maybe unto blessed. It's just seen as part of what makes me me. I was seen reading Consumer Reports during dull spots at family gatherings when I was 7, so it's just an outgrowth, and yes, I get calls and emails when it's time. However, I have saved a few late center dial Maytags in the family.

My friends have a similar outlook. My best friend, his wife, and their sons are moving to Ohio in November, and I could not be happier. Together on the wild wild web we've already chosen the washer, dryer, and refrigerator.

Heavens! EVERYONE knows! I am the laundry go-to guy. People constantly asking about their broken dryer or which washer to buy. Several leads for old appliances come from my coworkers. People think it is cool because it is different.

I'd hold my breath...

whenever a repairman comes over. I have service contract on my furnace/AC, and had a service man in twice to change the belt on my old Amana washer. Also had the gas company out about this time last year to check the gas line. Everytime a stranger goes down the steps and into Hooverland I'd hold my breath and wait for a smart-aleck comment. I remember the realtors comments last spring when I was about to list the house for sale. Most people usually look around and just say WOW, and if time allows them they'll examine the cleaners more closely.
Seems a basement full of vacuums is no big deal.
People from work know my hobby too, as well as people from church. A couple of years ago Fred Nelson and I were featured in the local paper, and I went downtown one time to be on Channel 7's "Collectors Corner" segment of the news.
I've never tried to hide it.
The one thing I won't allow is for it to spill over into the rest of the house. All the vacuums live downstairs save for the two I use to clean with, and 3 cleaners that I keep upstairs in my bedroom.
That room never sees any company!

Like Peter everyone comes to me for laundry and machine advice.
I charge too! They have to make me dinner!

And now everyone is getting mad if they don't get invited to my winter laundry brunches!! I even have a guy who's pissed at me for not inviting him and I don't even know him , I know his wife and she had to tell me he is hurt he hasn't been invited!!!!

Although I will say this , it is harder to come out of the laundry shoot than it is the closet!!

Even the Provincetown gays were slamming my washer orientation!!

I usually find that people consider it eccentric that I collect washers which is ok with me. I just don't like when it is called a fetish. I tell those people that it is hobby like any other and that I do not hump my machines and get off on them....it is a hobby, not a fetish!!!
