An horizontal axis top loader is just as good as any horizontal axis front loader minus the glass door, so you can't see the laundry washing.
"Older" machines usually had slower spin speed compared to front loading ones or didn't spin altogether, but now the difference is almost none as you can find 1300-1400 rpm top loaders vs 1600-1800 rpm for front loaders
 
Been using one for 12 years now and love them - they really suit my set up. I think I would only go back to front loaders if they were vintage, like the old Hoovers

Have never really used one myself, but I'd imagine they aren't much different to most front loaders (bar the slower spin as has been mentioned previously), just a different positioning of the opening and a different way of loading really!

ive used a h-axis dryer (my blomberg tl45td awaiting a repaire) and it seems to be good appart from the tangling that seems to happen due to the meriloni style dimples in the drum (it's a deyer not a washer)
 
Spin Speed

Spin speed is not everything, a smaller drum spinning fast may not give you as great a speed at its outer edges, where the laundry ends up, as a larger drum spinning slower.
It is an easy calculation to do, just multiply the diameter of the drum (in feet) by 3.1416 and multiply the result by the speed in rev/min, this will give you the linear speed in feet per minute, and the fastest speed will extract the most water.

Currently, I have the last model that Servis made, which has gone full circle because my first one was the first h-axis that Servis made (I think). Inbetween I had a Hotpoint and a Hoover. Talking of spin speeds, they have all been 1000rpm or more, the Hoover was 1400 max and this Servis is 1200. I have to say that despite the slagging off that Servis gets, this machine it superior to both the Hoover and the Hotpoint IMO. It is the only machine with 3 proper baffles for a start and it certainly washes better than the Hotpoint. It has a very good range of programmes and options and the cycle times are not stupid like the 90 min quick wash on the Hotpoint!! They are just like a FL machine except you cant see what is going on. Sometimes, I think that is a good thing!
 
I have a weak spot for H-axis toploaders. There is no rubber ring that can leak or where sometimes small pieces of laundry end up. Or suds that stay there. And I also love the fact that there are the drum is hung up on both sides.

Sometimes the toploaders are made in other factories than the frontloaders, that might make a difference in quality. Glad you like your Servis, I think Asko toploaders were very similar at some point.

i would love to find a h-axis dryer here in SA. would be quite awesome. the only company still makin the washer herer is AEG-Electrolux. and there is only 1 option. 5.5kg 1200rom
 
Doesn't Candy sell anything in South Africa? They used to have an extensive range of vented and water condensing top loading dryers! Still they have a couple of models here on catalog. Otherwise Fagor/Brandt might have them too.
