Haier Denies Rumors Regarding Buying GE's Appliance Division

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I haven't owned a Haier product, but their washers and dishwashers don't get positive reviews at Consumer Reports. Unless Haier is looking at purchasing all the patents for GE's technology, I'm guessing GE appliances would rapidly become re-badged Haier products.

Guess it's a moot point, at any rate...

This week's Time magazine (August 25th issue) features a lengthy article on the "yard-sale of American businesses". There is, of course, mention of GE's sale of their appliance division, which the article says will be to Haier (China) or LG (South Korea).

If those are the choices, then I'm behind LG all the way.

I was under the mistaken impression LG, like Haier, was from China; LG is from South Korea.

At any rate, I recommend reading the article. It's a wake-up call, that's for sure.

So even the maker of some of the crappiest home appliances doesn't want the GE Appliance line... what does that tell us?

;-)

LG would make more sense, since they are the mfg of the GE Harmony washer line, right? Although I don't see where LG would benefit from the acquisition, as they have rapidly established themselves as a moderate quality player (I like their fridges). Maybe they want GE's service network, but that is more of a paper network as GE subcontracts the service to local companies (my impression). From what I hear LG service in the USA leaves a lot to be desired.

I wonder if Little Swan (the mfg of the ill-fated GE front loader) will make a bid.

What a surprise, GE whoring themselves out to China, again.

Seriously, could the GE of current PLEASE go away and the old 'Bring Good Things To Life' days come back?

About the only "Imagination at work" at GE these days is imagining how much money they'll make by moving everything to China.

Heck, remember when GE actually tried to excel at everything they did (except electronics, which they always sucked at)? Great appliances, great industrial stuff, great nuke plants, great jet engines, great locomotives, great light bulbs...

GE China Co. owns a 30% share of Little Swan Appliance Co. so that would be an interesting and bold move for LS. With a little government backing, LS and therefore China would have a pretty good foothold in the U.S. & global appliance market. With sourcing from China, they already have a pretty fat thumb in the industry anyway.

The GE front-load washer was "American designed - China built." and the Harmony machines were LG. There was a lawsuit against LG for that direct-drive motor.

Actually, GE's philosophy was to be the market leader in every product they got into. This doesn't necessarily mean the most excellent product... just the biggest sales success. So if schlock sold best, schlock is what GE would produce. And in some cases, it did.

When GE thought major appliances had become a commodity, they produced junk.
