OK, that was kind of a sobering prognostication of things to come. Cheery, chirpy music accompanying the clinical tone of a disembodied airport announcement informing us we'll be crammed into small spaces without enough electricity to go around, and that this little unpowered dishwasher will be one of the few things we can cling to as a reminder of our First World past.

But here's the truly pertinent question: Does it count as cardio?

Sorry, Malcolm; it's certainly an interesting idea, but the dystopian vision of the future implied in the narration completely overwhelms any information about the dishwasher. I've watched it three times and still find it a bit unnerving.

What next??????RIDICULOUS device!!!!I am sure even at that time there will still be enough electricity available in ANY home to use a dishwasher-and water,too.Think I would wash the dishes in the sink rather than use THAT thing!How'Bout the "Carosel" dishwasher????
 
first we had the salad spinner to get the water off of what we were eating.....and now we have this wind up crank wonder to put the water back on the dishes we ate off!  What will they think of next...

You know damn right well, that someone is going to try to see just how fast they can "crank" the sucker up to.
 
"How fast you can crank this sucker up to??"Lets see--hook it to the PTO of a vintage Sunbeam Mixmaster or KA mixer???Or lets go WAY out------HOW'BOUT the 1000RPM PTO of the "ol tractor?????That will clean those dishes!!!!Or for us vacuum cleaner fans-try to hook it to your Kirby!!!
 
Larry, I could see myself having a heart attack or at least serious <span style="font-size: 12pt;">off-balance issues, not only for the clothes but for myself if I was </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">trying to spin that thing to 1000 RPM!</span>

 

I think it should have been done with a machine that doesn't need to reverse the motor direction between the wash and spin. Pedaling backwards for a 15 minutes wash must be something!

 

 
 
It would be great to have a gas-powered Maytag Automatic! The only complicated thing to figure would be the reversing direction! Or maybe try that with a Whirlpool belt drive, as long as the motor can also deliver some electrical power for the timer and the solenoids! And having a variable speed adjustment would be cool!
 
Guess the gas Maytags should be revivied-I sure the "gas automatic" could be designed to work around the non reversible gas motor.VFD's shouldn't be a problem now-only thing is they won't work with cap start motors with the centrifical switches.The VFD should work with of course 3Ph motors(the VFD can double as the phase convertor)and could be used with cap start-run motors that dont have centrifical switches.You won't have as wide a speed range,though-but probably enough for washer.I also thought Speed Queen made a gas wringer washer that used a vert shaft B&S gas motor mounted on one side.You used clutch levers for shifting to agitate or wring.The vert shaft B&S motor would really be the same as used on most rotary lawn mowers.
 
You know, I'm just thinking.. Wouldn't it make more sense to use water pressure to drive the dishwasher instead of a hand crank? After all, a lot of city water systems deliver water at about 40 PSI, should be enough to drive the thing.

As well, why use a special tablet when every building is mandated to have hot water? (Unless it is somewhere in Europe where they don't always have that?)
 
What the hand cranked dishwasher doesn't show is how you can get clean water into the machine for the rinse cycle. I guess you have to dump the old dirty water out of the bottom part, refill with fresh clean hot water for the rinse and repeat until you are satisfied.
