Songwriter Burt Bacharach is 78 years old today.

He wrote numerous hits for Dionne Warwick, the Carpenters and many others. The perfect soundtrack for a wash-in.

Who

Wasn't Burt Backscratch married to Angie Dicksomething or do I have the wrong couple?

Just forget his personal life and concentrate on the wonderful songs he wrote.

He wrote it best when he wrote "What the world needs now is love, sweet love".

Burt, as well as Jimmy Webb and Laura Nyro wrote what I affectionately call "Avocado Music". Imagine a housewife in the late 60s that uses avocado appliances (Kenmore of course). Now what kind of music would she listen to? Dionne, The 5th Dimension, Herb Alpert, Jackie DeShannon, Sergio Mendez, Tom Jones, Elvis Presley (his late 60s-early 70s stuff), etc.

Let the wash-in begin!

6 degrees of seperation

jasonl, Laura become one of my favorites back in my early coming out days, mid seventies. Her cousin Joe Nigro, and
several of his children live in Grass Valley. Joe was married to the sister of my "ex" for about 20 years.

Jason, is it just me, or are all of the Fifth Dimension songs written by Laura Nyro always the BEST?

Especially Stoned Soul Picnic. That song just has an awesome sound to it on the on the LP, even in mono...LOL. I downloaded it on mp3 about a month ago and it just doesn't sound the same.

"Red yellow honey, sassafras and moonshine..."

Surrey down.....

The Nyro tunes are very melodic and soulful. The Webb pieces are also great. The Girls Song (Webb) and Stone Soul Picnic (Nyro) are back to back, as well as Worst That Could Happen and Wedding Bell Blues. Every songwriter has their own style and you can hear the difference. Burt's style is very melodic and sophisticated. Webb is very sincere in alot of his songs. And Nyro is actually a little of both, but some of her tunes are very playful as well (Stone soul picnic, Sweet Blindness).

All of their songs are very bright and easy to listen to which makes for a great wash-in.

Favorite Laura Nyro.....

album for me is "Gonna Take A Miracle" that she did with Labelle. "Desiree" is my favorite song from that album!

Another Burt song....

I was going through You Tube and i came across Dusty Springfield singing I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself. I cry everytime i hear that song. I always have heard Dionne Warwick's version but i love Dusty's voice and the way she sings it.
