Believe it or not, I remember hearing of celebrations of Juneteenth when I lived back near downtown Buffalo... somewhere near 1985-6. There was never anything saying what it was about, just that it was Juneteenth, and blacks (African Americans) were the ones celebrating it. No offense intended, but I thought it was a bonus welfare check holiday at the time. Remember, this was downtown Buffalo in the mid-'80's, and I was riding the bus down Broadway watching school children eating salt & vinegar potato chips with Orange Crush or grape soda for breakfast.

Why Juneteenth is important...

"Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. "

The Order

One of General Granger’s first orders of business was to read to the people of Texas, General Order Number 3 which began most significantly with:

"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer."

Ask any Texas Laundry worker in summer

if the slaves are really free? 112 by the ironer yesterday.

Does the law require any type of spot-cooling for the employees?

To what degree of "undress" are they allowed to come to work?

We do have swap coolers

But have to be careful where air blows and it can contaminate clean work. also cause havac for feeding and folding of the work. Shorts are allowed but that is the limit. And they must be no higher than 2 inches above knee. The best is a size larger than one normally wears in scrubs. That seems to be the most comfortable for all. Was 117 by ironer yesterday.. Will be like this the rest of the summer.. Just have to cope. Have no one work on ironer for more than 15 mins at a time then rotate .
