I found this waffle iron today, and I liked it because of the design on the lid, and the fact that the waffle irons are removable for cleaning (My current Waffle Iron - an equally happy Kenmore - doesn't have that feature.)

Any thoughts on how old this might be, and how I might re-season the waffle irons? They are undergoing the mandatory sterilazation in the Bosch as I type this)

Fresh solid Crisco

Has any number of uses...

Nice waffle iron, Dan. I have a newer GE myself, but I'm not sure as to its mental state. How can you determine whether your waffle iron is happy or not? I'd hate to think that mine might be despondent.

WOW! I got one like that last Saturday morning at a yard sale from their "free" table. However when trying it out-the element in the lower part burned up.In looking at it-it looks like the elements are replaceable. Will have to look for them.I have a matching griddle and it works.also on their yard sale free table I got a basket full of Oster and Wahl commercial electric hair shears. Will have to attach the cords, clean them up and try em-also many spare blades and blades for Supercut #22 barber scissors.the person was a barber. One of the Wahl clippers has a metal body that looked like it was polished finish at one time. Will have to polish it up.Oster Model 76 and Wahl "Senior" clippers.

The one I have has the removable and reversible cooking grates. One side is for waffles and the other flat say for Grilled cheese sandwitches.Just need to replace the heating elements in my machine-I am wondering if the small appliance parts place is still open out here.

Jon, I don't mind a good slap every once in a while (as long as it's not too hard of a slap - seeing as I'm a big wuss). It's very melodramatic ;-)

The question I forgot to ask is how you would use solid Crisco to season. Do you just smear it on and heat the iron up?

Afterwards, if you have Unfortunate Scorching Accidents or the like, and you need to put them in the dishwasher, do they need to be reseasoned?

Yes,

but don't gob it on. Get it thoroughly on, but not the whole can. Heat it, brush it around with a pastry brush, and then mop up the excess with paper towels, preferably plain white ones.

Should not have to reseason a lot, maybe every second or third time the grids go through the dishwasher.

Ideally, they would not see the dishwasher, just be brushed when cool.

Never use a spray coating, it will burn and get nasty.

Idealy, I would be a better cook ;-)

Actually, I'm not a bad cook. I just like to know what my options are.

Thanks for the info, Lawrence! I now know what today's project will be.

The other General waffle iron

I knows I have one of those GE waffle irons somewhere but I can't put my finger on it and a Sunbeam but here's 3 I do have out..
On the left, an old Westinghouse, in the middle a Triona ? I found only a couple of weeks ago and on the right a General Mills.
I've never heard of the brand name Triona, it appears to be quite old as the prongs for the detachable cord are flat and not round like all other NAmerican old appliances, Maybe it's from Europe, I don't know.

Here are my two vintage waffle irons.

On the left is a 1940's Knapp-Monarch. It has never been used, but I don't have the box.

On the right is a Westinghouse that is bolted to a serving tray. It works but needs to be cleaned up. I mainly display it on my breakfast table.

Here is another picture of the Knapp-Monarch. The little red pamphlet is an advertisement for Knapp-Monarch Magik Mist insecticide. This wonderful product is effective in: restaurants, busses, planes, trains, ships, hospitals, porches, and everywhere in the home. They show little pictures of the product being sprayed in these situations, with people sitting there while it is being applied. What is this wonderful product you ask? It is: Dichloro Diphenyl Trichloroethane, DDT.

In those days DDT was treated like a harmless "parlor game"Look what the stuff has done! Now its a MAJOR toxin!Like PCB its banned.Like that Knapp Monarch Waffle machine-My mouth is watering from the tasty waffle morsels coming out of that machine!Just hope they didn't use DDT in the waffle recipe!Love those old appliances and doco that comes with them!
