Thanksgiving...

I was invited to the parents home of my two best friends..I took a Cherry Cheesecake and a Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding. Today is the parents 50th Anniversary so we started the celebration early...Tomorrow is their party and at 8 am charter busses are taking all of the party goers into Canada to Windsor Casino until 3 pm then we return to the hotel for dinner and the party...Should be quite a day. Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!!!

Thanksgiving dinner was today (Saturday) for us.

My parents came over, and we had a nice day. We also ate too much!

Neither my roommate nor I really like traditional Thanksgiving fare, so we go for non-traditional meals. This year, it was German food -- good and filling!

Unfortunately, there's too much going on during the meal for me to get pictures of the actual feast. The menu this year was:
Kartoffelnsuppe (potato soup)
BeyerischerWurstsalat (knockwurst salad)
Sauerbraten (roast beef marinated in vinegar and spices)
Roter Kohl (red cabbage)
Spaetzle (noodles)
Broetchen und Butter (rolls and butter)
Schwartzwalder Kirschtorte (black-forest cherry tort)

and of course Coffee, Beer, and Schnapps.

Here is the bar, with Spiced Apple Cider, Coffee, Goldfish, Mixed Nuts, and Pretzels.

On the other side of the room, there's Iced Tea in the JetSpray, and a selection of tasty beverages.

Out in the living room, there is a selection of Christmas catalogs from 1936/37.

Downstairs, most of the food is prepared, and a few things are simmering and baking. Mostly under control -- Yaay!

Several hours later, after all of the cooking and eating is done, here's the KitchenAid full of Corelle, Libbey, and other stuff.

We went upstairs to watch Rustler's Rhapsody, and when we were done, so were the dishes. So convenient!

During the movie, our dinners had settled enough so that we had room for Black Forest Cherry Tort.

And here it is on the table, waiting for everyone to be served.

Ahhhh Black Forest, truly my most favorite cake. I hate to admit but often I used to buy one at Safeway and eat the whole thing, in a day sometimes, I like it that much.

Thanksgiving:
Thank you dear Lawd for everything I have and everything I don't have!

Thanksgiving was in Pennsylvania and a family member got a new dishwasher!

The near BOL builder's model GE went to the krusher due to a recall of the rinse-aid dispenser. Have discount (many dollars-off) coupon; will-travel! In its place was a black GE Profile tall-tub model with a SS tub! IT IS QUIET! It washes very well,and has great racking!It appears to still be a water-hog (I think!) YAY!

I was impressed.

Still missing (on this model) was a status-indicator light sequence (i.e. WASH, RINSE, DRY),

Family is nice but Dorothy knows best:

Thanks, Pete, but I'm sentimental.

Although I love both the very cool name and very cool look of Radaranges, there's a soft spot in my heart for my Goldstar carousel microwave.

My parents were never particularly wealthy, but they did what they could to equip us for life on our own. They fed us and housed us and paid for a good, basic education. When I graduated from electronics school, I got a job and I got an apartment. That year, for christmas, my mom got a matching pair of Goldstar microwave ovens for me and my sister.

I've had it for just about 22 years now -- over half my life -- and I plan on holding onto it for as long as I can. My sister broke hers and threw it away years ago. That's indicative of the differences between us.

Upstairs, in the bar, is my family's first microwave. It's a Tappan (yes, it Browns the Food!) from about 1977.

Maybe someday, if there's a catastrophic failure, I'll finally get a Radarange. Until then I'll hold on to these little bits of my life.

p.s. Right next to the Goldstar Microwave is my commercial Toastmaster. MSRP: $850. Needless to say, I didn't pay that for it.

By the way, the KitchenAids can both have their front panel

The Superba has Black, White, Almond, and Harvest Gold panels, while the Custom has White, Almond, Harvest Gold, and Avocado.

The stove, microwave, and range hood downstairs are black, so I made that one black to match.

The stove upstairs is almond, so I chose that for the upstairs one. Besides (although this might brand me as a pariah here at AW.org), I happen to like almond. There. I said it.

I hear you about wanting to keep your mw. My first was a then new 76 Toshiba 500, built like a tank all metal which I later gave to my mom when I got a new Litton with defrost a couple of years later. Mom gave it away about 15 years ago when they got a plastic Panasonic that fit onto her redone kitchen with builtin microwave shelf. I wished I still had that Toshiba.
When I met my present partner almost 25 years ago now coming up soon, we bought a new GE full size with auto everything. It's still working away in the kitchen but in the meantime I had found a few Radaranges and wanted one of those in the kitchen so we had two going for awhile until we moved..the kitchen in this house won't support two microwaves so I'm letting him have his way because the old GE is the one he really likes and probably holds memories LOL.. actually it is a better oven than the RR, just doesn't look as nice.
