Does anyone know of a place, either a store or a web-site that might have a restored or (hoping against all odds) a new harvest gold 30" gas range? My next-door neighbor has a '74 kitchen, all harvest gold, and her stove has died. Any help would be appreciated....

Thanks for the response....but my ever-resourceful neighbor (and thrifty, too) bought a new white Hotpoint gas range with standing pilots (she didn't like the electronic starter ones) and painted it black with Rust0Leum appliance epoxy. She also put on the black panels that came with her '92 GE dishwasher and her next project is to paint her '74 side by side fridge black. The kitchen looks great, and for very little cost....

dead stove

So is the stove un-repairable? Fixing it would save quite a hassle. Can't imgine what would go wrong that couldn't be repaired.

Where did your neighbor find a NEW range with standing pilots?! I woudn't think that they would even be made anymore, or that the government would even ALLOW them to be made anymore. And honestly, as much as I like vintage appliances, the standing pilot thing is really wasteful and adds heat. If I had a vintage range, I'd turn off the pilots and use one of those long electric lighters to light the burners manually. Our next door neighbor does this on his vintage range.

I think the pilot ovens are still available. My brother bought one a couple years ago but he had to pay extra for it.

With the expense of fixing the electric ones it is probably a wash between the two. Igniters are high mortality as are the spark modules, electrodes and spark swithces.

It has conflicting information, it says pilot ignition at top, but when you read on, it says it's electronic ignition.

Pilot ignition stoves

They are still made, but they are generally BOL- that if a gas stove has electrical components- timer, clock, light, it has to have electric/electronic ignition.

I know they are sold to the Amish, as their summer stoves. Lehmanns.com has them, last time I looked.

I learned to cook on a '50s Maytag gas stove, with pilots and my last gas stove (oh I miss a gas cooktop!) was an 80s Maytag (rebadged Hardwick) with sparkers. I took decent care, and had no problems with the sparkers. We missed the pilot heat in the winter, but not in the summer!

new stove standing pilot

I bought a Fridgedair new almond/bisque stove a few months ago from Sears. It's cheap and I like 'em that way. You really don't need the controls on the stove when you have a TOL above the range microwave. It does have a light and definately electronic pilots, I can't imagine having ALL that waste and heat from a standing pilot.
But I know Sears was offering their cheapest ($20 less than what I bought) 30" gas range which did have standing pilot. I believe GE also offers at least 1 BOL , white only, standing pilot gas stove.

standing pilots

My neighbor paid less than $300.00 for her new 30" GE bol stove...but it is what she wanted. One of her reasons may be that we lose power frequently...summer and winter...everyone on my street cooks with gas because of the frequent power failures. She wanted to be able to use the oven, no matter what. Tried to talk her into a sealed burner range, but couldn't do it.

Standing pilots ranges are available at Lehmans, as mentioned in one of the above posts, and at many rural hardware/appliance stores (I am in West Virginia). The sales people usually try to sell up, but if you insist, you can buy one.

She wasn't willing to pay the repair costs for the old stove...the new one only twice as much as repairs would have to her old one. Unfortunately, the old one was sent back with the delivery truck.
