Hi all! Well the washer at the rental unit where my kids stay at had an issue so I put into service this GE washer that had been sitting in my back yard for probably about 7 years or so. I posted about it at the time. Anyway I am embarrassed as it had been under a tent neglected but it cleaned up and seems to work fine. A real testimony to how well these were made. I guess it will be staying as the other one, which I had planned to fix, was run into by my daughter as I had stored it in the carport. Oh well.

I think this is from 1972 or something. If someone knows please let me know. Anyway I think I had the dryer at one point but it is long gone. Wish I had it to make a pair now. This originally was a low use washer that's why I kept it all this time. Thanks for looking and Merry Christmas!

Check the Rating plate

This is most likely a 1973 model. If you check the rating plate on the left side (bottom front) and there should be an "N" at the end of the model number. Looks like it came with a mini-basket.

 

The big well in the middle of the big filter pan was for a clever powdered detergent dispenser for the TOL models that had a PRE-WASH feature. These were from a wonderful vintage--a couple of years before the DISPENSAL models.

Wouldn't be surprised if it outlasts the average lifespan of a brand new washer a couple of times over. Water generally isn't a problem in Washington so you should be good there.

the mini basket is on the shelf in the first photo. I'll have to look up how it is used. I seem to remember you can do two loads at the same time kinda.

Mini-Basket is to be used alone at the designated water level selection.  It's just enough water to keep the Mini-Basket filled and overflowing for filter recirculation.  There's not enough water in the tub/regular basket to effectively wash anything in there at the same time.

Some late 60's Hotpoints had a feature that allowed two loads to be done at the same time. There was an attachment that looked kind of like a mini basket and at that time Hotpoint still had a solid tub. Not sure if that made a difference. I don't recall that feature lasted long but at that time Hotpoints were a completely separate design and manufacture than the parent company GE machines. So GE never offered a similar feature on their GE branded models.

Hotpoint Duo-Load is a different design than GE's Mini-Basket.  Duo-Load doesn't mix water between the main tub and the accessory 2nd tub ... can be different temperatures, one w/bleach one without.  Running dual-loads has them both half the size of the full main tub.

I believe the original assertion that this pair is from 1972 is probably accurate.  1972 was the last year for the graphics of this timer.  In 1973 GE introduced a somewhat simpler timer face with bands of orange and a yellow-green, which they continued to use for quite a few years.
