Me personally: Light colors, easier to keep clean because they don't hide dirt. Yellows and turquoises are nice. Yellow for the kitchen, turquoise for the laundry room, light blue for the bathroom. Plain white always works, and you can paint the walls whatever color you like. Darker colors, harder to keep clean. Stainless steel: good for the kitchen sink and appliance interiors, but I think for appliance exteriors it's a bit on the coldish side.
In this day & age, color choices tend to be limited. I recall when telephones were available in from six to sixteen colors depending on manufacturer (and overseas you had such combinations as British Post Office two-tone green, and German Post orange with black dial and cords). Nowadays, in my sales proposals for telephone systems, I try to be humorous about it and say, "available in a rainbow of exactly two inspring colors: white and black."

Stainless Steel
I don't seem to see a fingerprint problem with SS anymore thanwith the old smooth finish colors. Remneber when they went "wrinkeled" in an attempt to hide fingerprints? As for light colors being easier to clean because they don't "hide" the dirt, a lot of people like dark colors for the exact reason that they DO "hide" the dirt so it can go longer before having to be cleaned. It seems that plain old White is the only "safe" color, goes with everything, has always been and probably will always be available so you don't end up having to buy a mis-matched color appliance because a color isn't available anymore.

Stainless Steel
I have stainless appliances in my kitchen (actually the second kitchen with them), and I really don't have an issue with what my cleaning lady needs to do to keep to keep them clean. LOL Just kidding!! They really are not all that bad to keep clean. We use this stuff we got from Ace hardware. It seems to almost protect the finish. The only ones I don't like are the drips down the front of the dishwasher. When I can get my partner to load the dishwasher, it usually ends up to be a messy proposition. I guess you'd get that no matter what color or finish you have.

ss vs colours
Aw c'mon! I'm finally at a point where I can begin to replace my major appliances and am considering stainless steel. Now I'm hearing how awful it is. Don't get me wrong - I love the colours! Wish I could find a yellow fridge or stove. Even coppertone or poppy red would be terrific. Unfortunately, we are offered white on white (no way, too contrived), bisque (really looks sick), black (ok if it's not shiny), and stainless (fingerprints are way better to deal with than that crummy plastic-feeling satina finish).
The cool (not cold) thing about stainless, is that it can fit into a retro-style kitchen, country kitchen, or modern kitchen. I think if you accessorize (think Joan Steffend)to your own personal taste, stainless can be great.

The Stainless gets my vote. You're right, it fits just about anywhere and in my opinion is not really that difficult to deal with.

I think stainless steel can be very stunning used in a kitchen, and I don't at all dislike it. Only time will tell if it endures in the marketplace as well or as long or longer than colors and finishes past.
I'm glad we don't have them here because while I enjoy cleaning, I am admittedly retentive about things, and with my roommate it's the easier to clean and keep, the better. He works in a commercial kitchen and he's just hell on wheels when he gets in the kitchen (whereas I am very conscious of what I'm doing and constantly cleaning as I go) (fortunately for me he doesn't cook at home real often). Takes me about a week to get the kitchen back the way I want it after he's done. LOL!
My only thing is, knowing how so many people today are totally not into housekeeping, I wonder how they will do with SS over the long haul.
We're kind of opposite on the dark/light color thing. He likes darker colors because he doesn't clean and it hides his sins, where I like the lighter, so I can see what's dirty and clean it, pronto! We used to have a dark floor, and switched to a light ceramic. I love it because I can see everything, he hates it because, well, you can see everything. We have dark, high gloss countertops which are very pretty, but it takes practice to make sure you get everything up off them and keeping that mirror like finish spotless. More than once I have stumbled haphazardly into some sticky goo that either got missed or no one knew was there! LOL

Scott! I'll let you play with all my washers & vacuums if you come clean my house! I was going to post pics of my Whirlpool Tall-tub dishwasher the other day but decided against it as the kitchen was NASTY!

Terry has it right! It's a Bosch Distinctive SHU43C06 4-cycle DW in Black. I saw the white version at Lowe's and it looked really good--I'm itching to see how it looks in black (and how it looks in our kitchen...might make all the difference in the world)!

Bottom line, SS has the same advantage that Black and White do, it's a universal color that goes with everything. I think the "Almond" thing was an attempt to have a "universal" color that wouldn't offend too many people while "sort of" going with any color the kitchen motif might be in, yet not be boring like "Hospital White". Sort of the same principle as "rental house/apartment off-white" that rental units are always painted in.
