Here i am on a long busniess trip and working my butt off.. And my 2005 Chevy Malibu decides to go Kaput.. Or rather, from the front end of the car its going, bang bang bang bang bang clunk clunk clunk clunk... and crunch.. Anyway, i got it towed 200 miles to san diego and here i am.. at my bf's condo and stuck.. $700 to repair the car.. Per the net, this is a common issue with these cars (the intermetideate steering shaft) and the tie rod end was bad... What would make them go bad at 68K miles? I am soo angry

T-Cub,

My parent's have a letter from GM that their 2005 Malibu is covered for steering problems up to 75,000 miles. Best get that checked out right away - it may be that GM will cover this one, too.

As you wrote, this is a known problem. Of course, there are several known problems, so can't promise you anything. But, let's hope!

Oh, and, yes, I was stuck in pre-war Yugoslavia when our ferry sank in the harbor of our island...nobody hurt, thank goodness.

Adrift in Miami:

My Cutlass convertible had a similar problem on a trip to Miami. It was years ago, but I think it cost me closer to a grand. I felt very betrayed, as I had loved that car like a child (well, almost).

Thanks.. Right now if they dont i will be getting rid of the car monday... I cant afford $1500 in steering repairs (they also det. the rack and pinion is gone, and the whole shaft...and struts??)

GM service bulletin, more needed

OK, folks, here is the service bulletin my parents have. I don't think it is enough for travlincub321's problems, tho' it's a start, at least.
If anybody here has a Chevy, Pontiac, Buick or Caddy from that period (2004-2006) and knows anything about steering recalls or has US access to a database on it, I bet he'd be forever thankful.
