Philco Air Conditioning was big in Spain

My husbands' former apartment in Seville had one in the bedroom. Identical to the American version, fake woodgrain and all...but 220 volt of course.

sex sells.

If you think about basic drives for humans, you come up with sex and food. Food ensures survival of the individual, and sex survival of your genes.

So they are both powerful images to use in advertising.

It does seem a little silly.

Air conditioning is sexy, lol

Trying to uhm, "be intimate" when it is 98 degrees with 100% humidity is not nearly as pleasant as doing so in a wonderfully cool dry room, where you are not hot sweaty and exhausted before you even start, ;)

Vintage:

Oh, I don't know about that. It might be somewhat uncomfortable but there's nothing wrong with getting a bit sweaty and burning a few calories. It may even be better than going to a gym. ;)

Oh, Yes!

"Yes, it makes me wonder if some sections of the public thought that air conditioning was sissy."

Absolutely. I remember in the early '60s that a lot of people talked about A/C as if it showed a lack of moral fiber, like it was going to turn America into a nation of 90-pound weaklings who might even be Communists.

Until they figured out a way to afford it themselves.

A person

can get by in Northeastern Ohio without air conditioning (maybe not happily,) I did for a long time. However, we have extreme humidity in summer.

One thing I make an effort to always remember is that in the Deep South, summer air conditioning can be as much a matter of life or death as winter heating here in the Nawth.

I have a 5K bedroom unit that a kind friend gave me a few years ago, and I am grateful for it every summer.

No idea whether that Philco was really quiet, but the man's not bad at all.

Philco....

Yes, they were fairly quiet, my hometown had two Philco dealers,so Philco stuff was fairly common, I remember more Frigidaire and GE AC units than anything, Our two GE dealers,"Home Electric Co, and Crowells " were very popular stores, as was Shaw Furniture Co, the Frigidaire dealer, Our Philco dealers,Teague Furniture"Also sold Norge", and D.D. Suddreth, who sold Maytag as well, were good substantial stores, but I dont think they sold as much as the others.

Now that you mention it, Sandy, I do know some older people who don't like air conditioning, and act like there's something wrong with wanting to be cool. They never spell out why, but maybe that attitude has something to do with it.
