I showed interest to the range owner

I'm only an hour from Arlington. Thursday I'll be there servicing a washer so if it's still available I'll swing by and have a look at it, and try to take it home somehow.

I'm sure it's magnificent in person - or maybe it'll smell.

I swear, I get the STRONG feeling, often, that I am not welcome or appreciated here.

There are several examples of this I'm not going into here, but what is the point of belonging to a club where folks don't seem to care a bit, or worse, are down right ignorant?

There are at least 3 people in this who have machines which were once mine, and those guys don't even give me the time of day any more. Who needs that kind of ignorance? Gregm, Jimmyfilterflo, Jon Charles...what's up with that? And now I guess I can add Dadoes to my list of supporters. JasonL is also another dude who I have spent hundreds of hours chatting with and emailing, and even he has become so ignorant as to no longer speak....so that's 5 I can think of right off the top of my head.

Just in case anybody wants to know, I've been a vintage appliance collector and restorer since long before this site, which I love dearly, started, and I suspect that I will be a collector restorer the rest of my life.

A little encouragement, please.

Well, perhaps people are trying to conserve bandwidth so we don't miss out on any member's grandmother having a hangnail or latest news of woe and then we can all join in the pity-party. Wouldn't want to miss any of that, now would we? ;-)

This range looks like a 1958 or 59, so I am interested to see more of it or, at least hear more about it - after all, that's what this forum is for. I have the 57 model of this range and found a 59 which I scavenged for parts. Let me know if you need any parts for the one you're going to see, other than the switches for three of the burners, most of them won't work on my 57.

We do care, really we do, but offering advice to the shut-ins and suffering masses takes a lot of time!

How does it look/and/or smell as you put it? LOL Can't wait for the update. I also saw Veg's link to a stovetop by GE with push button fixed heat controls, if it had been the Hotpoint one I have been looking for I would have been over and picked it up! I hope you can score that pank range, I know you would have it spotless in no time.

Hello from a fellow Hollywood'er!

It was FILTHY, filthy, fithy!~

There are chips all over it, on every surface. The chrome trim on the top of the range is badly pitted as if it's been under salt water. There is so much grease in the keyboard that you can barely actuate the buttons. The sensor is missing from the automatic burner, and all the burner elements have black burner rings instead of chrome. The model number plate has been ruined with oven cleaner so you can't read it anymore.

It's in the garage now, not in use at all.

In my opinion, this is scrap metal.

Oh well..it was worth looking, anyway - even though it was about 90 minutes drive in each direction, and there was no was I was going to fit it into my Mazda anyway. If it had been in nice shape, I certainly would have snagged it.

But it stunk. Even had mice evidence in it. Gross.

I love the 2 ranges I'm cooking on now, and was only gonna pick it if it was cherry. Sadly it was not.

I sure did get the mercury switch, Jon. Thank you for it very much, man. I sincerely appreciate it.

Oh yuk, you were smart to leave it behind. I'll bet the owners were crushed you didn't fall in love with it immediately. The 59 I found here had lots of cosmetic issues that would have been difficult to overcome. I was happy to get all the parts though and it was worth the pittance I paid and the three mile drive home...

Looks like it would not be too good for parts even, thanks for posting all the pictures. I know I ruined two sets of buttons on mine trying to degunk them, now they won't work at all, so no reason to try with those.

critters and stoves

I learned a long time ago that you need to be very wary of old stoves and nesting. Back in the midwest, before moving into any apartment, I would always turn all the burners and ovens on full blast, and wait with a can of Raid in case anything was hiding in it.

Just a few years ago I got an O&M Coppertone gas range that was a real beauty (I still haven't figured out just why I got rid of it, but that's another story). When it first came to me it had mouse dung in it, and a lot of the insulation was chewed up. It also had roaches. That's very weird, as we don't generally have roaches in Seattle.

The difference was that that stove was in good shape cosmettically, and had good bones. It was just really filthy. I don't mind a good scrubbing as long as something's going to look pretty (and work) when it's done. Of course, scrubbing gets a lot more complicated with an electric stove.
