I wanted to share this with everyone, especially the many dog lovers here at AW.
Honestly, it brought tears to my eyes when I read this, but it also made me sit back and think that each day I have with my dogs is precious time spent.

Be prepared to use alot of Kleenex!

"I Am Your Dog"

I am your dog, and I have a little something I'd like to whisper in your ear. I know that you humans lead busy lives. Some have to work, some have children to raise. It always seems like you are running here and there, often much too fast, often never noticing the truly grand things in life.

Look down at me now, while you sit there at your computer. See the way my dark brown eyes look at yours? They are slightly cloudy now. That comes with age. The gray hairs are beginning to ring my soft muzzle. You smile at me; I see love in your eyes. What do you see in mine? Do you see a spirit? A soul inside, who loves you as no other could in the world? A spirit that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrong doing for just a simple moment of your time? That is all I ask. To slow down, if even for a few minutes to be with me.

So many times you have been saddened by the words you read on that screen, of other of my kind, passing. Sometimes we die young and oh so quickly, sometimes so suddenly it wrenches your heart out of your throat. Sometimes, we age so slowly before your eyes that you may not even seem to know until the very end, when we look at you with grizzled muzzles and cataract clouded eyes. Still the love is always there, even when we must take that long sleep, to run free in a distant land. I may not be here tomorrow; I may not be here next week. Someday you will shed the water from your eyes, that humans have when deep grief fills their souls, and you will be angry at yourself that you did not have just "One more day" with me.

Because I love you so, your sorrow touches my spirit and grieves me. We have NOW, together. So come, sit down here next to me on the floor, and look deep into my eyes. What do you see? If you look hard and deep enough we will talk, you and I, heart to heart. Come to me not as "alpha" or as "trainer" or even "Mom or Dad," come to me as a living soul and stroke my fur and let us look deep into one another's eyes, and talk. I may tell you something about the fun of chasing a tennis ball, or I may tell you something profound about myself, or even life in general.

You decided to have me in your life because you wanted a soul to share such things with, someone very different from you. And, here I am. I am a dog, but I am alive. I feel emotion, I feel physical senses, and I can revel in the differences of our spirits and souls. I do not think of you as a "Dog on two feet" -- I know what you are. You are human, in all your quirkiness, and I love you still.

Now, come sit with me, on the floor. Enter my world, and let time slow down if only for 15 minutes. Look deep into my eyes, and whisper to my ears. Speak with your heart, with your joy and I will know your true self. We may not have tomorrow, and life is oh so very short.

Love,

Your Dog

Thank you

For a sharing a beautiful story. I always enjoy these types of stories but must be prepared before I read them, they usually follow with a good cry and this was no exception.

Thank You Shane

As an owner of 4 dogs (1 sounding similar to the one in the story) this was extrememly touching. Every once in awhile I need a reminder of what is really important and to set aside the daily tasks.

Very Nice!

I love dogs! Here's Sammy, my 4 year old brown lab, free from a friend.

I'll have to pass this on to my roommate, who's into dogs. Currently, there are several in residence, both pet and temporary rescue residents. Although "temporary" may be delusional thinking. A pit bull came earlier this summer. He was coming for "a month" to fatten him up. Within 48 hours, the rescue organization was already saying, "You know, if you like him, you can keep him!"

Tuthill, you have a beautiful Lab. I absolutely LOVE my two Chocolate Labs and consider them two of my kids...(they are probably better behaved then my children) 'George' is a Red Cross Hero Award winner and 'Mocha' lets my infant niece and nephews do things to her that make me cringe and she doesn't bare a tooth. Not bad for 'pound puppies'...

That story is wonderful, Shane. Thank you for sharing!

My Boxers

Richmond and Georgia go everywhere they can with me.

I leave the car running in summer for the AC while I am in the grocery. And the heat in the winter.

They sleep with me at night and each get a real chicken dinner every night (I don't buy canned food, they get chicken quarters every night cooked in the slow cooker). I give them a pork neck bone as a treat every morning when I leave for work and as an after dinner treat. We go for walks during the week and have long walks around Sparta on weekends.

Mine are in bed next to me right now and I am on the laptop computer.

I am the caretaker, they are my companions.

Bear

I have a beautiful black Pomeranian named "Bear" because when he was a few weeks old,he would stand up on his hind legs and look lik a circus bear.He does so many tricks that Nobody tought him. They just happened. He loves playing ball and keeps a baloon in the air by nudging them with his nose and always lets me know when he needs to go out.We are real close and he follows me like my shadow. He's not a licker per say but is very affectionate. He's a great watchdog but,has such a loud bark that he scares those he's barking at.When they get the nerve to pet him,he shows his friendship with a few licks.I love him!i had a broaderline collee back in the late 70's,early 80's and after he ran away from my sister's house,I greaved so much Swaring I'd never have another dog.Oh well, times change!

our girls are quite lucky. they are never taken for granted, are gushed over every day & spoiled rotten. our older girl(9yrs.old) has developed a problem. the doctor's think it's her back or else a degenerative disease (ALS for dogs). neither one is particularly good & we hope that she remains pain free, as she's been up to now.

we're still trying to wrap our heads around an email we got today. a friend/breder has an 11 year old corgi that needs a home. it's owners moved to arizona and (for some reason) couldn't or wouldn't take it. we cannot comprehend how people could have a dog for 11 (or however many) years and simply abandon it when it wasn't convienient.

i apologize for the hugeness of the photo.

cats are the same!!!

I love dogs, but love cats more. They are easier to take care of to me.

Lovely story, and perfect sentiments. I see the spirit of the Universe in all living creatures I wish to call it the spirint of God. My beloved 19 year old male Siamese cat (indoor only) died of old age a couple of years ago, he's resting in my parents garden and I'm living there now. I occasionally now get choked up now when I see his grave.

I got two new kitties, 5 months old from the SPCA a week after he died. All of us are doing very well, ( I even feel my "baby" jump on the bed sometimes, and the other two aren't there, a topic for another thread!!!.) So, don't understatement the power of the spiritual world and the connection between animals and people.

My good wishes who have pets and love them so much, and get lots of "un" condertional love in return.

YES to Animals.

where your story went....

My dog has an owner who has lost many ( dogs and humans ) in his life. because of that I am one who knows and appreciates how short it all can be, how fast it can all get snuffed out.....that said I knew before I iread that that I would at least call my newest to my side for a deep stare and a pat on the head.

BUT after the reading instead we laid down and had a nice nap together.........thanks for the break, dude.

Thank you Shane

It is great to be reminded of things that we often take for granted. I have Maxwell with me at the shop most days and he brings such delight to people coming into the shop.

Thank you to all who have shared pictures of their companions. Here is one of Maxwell to share as well.
