So Ive had this 1980s Hotpoint (GE) dishwasher forever. Its always worked fine. here and there it vibrates. Just the past two times Ive ran it, the vibration gets even worse. The vibration starts as water enters the tub, and the arm starts rising and cleaning the dishes. And the vibration is worst then. Throughout the entire cycle it vibrates. The motor I think? And now yesterday, it was doing the same thing. But as it got into the last two rinse cycles, their was not only vibration, but a fast clicking sound. It was still cleaning the dishes, no issue with that. Just clicking & vibrating. Very fast & repeative clicking. Like its the impeller? So what on earth is wrong with it? Im afraid to use it because I dont want it to leak or not drain or something. Thanks, Dan!

It sounds like you have something caught in the pump. Check out YouTube for repair videos for GE - Hotpoint dishwashers, there should be many. This will usually be a good guide for removing and replacing the pump step-by-step.

Here is an example searching for GE dishwasher pump vibrating:

If the "noise" you're hearing is progressing and getting worse which it sounds like if I were you I wouldn't run the machine until you can determine what the problem is. It does sound like you may have something caught possibly in the sump area of the machine. But I am not familiar with your machine so I won't even attempt to advise you on what to do.

Hopefully it will be an easy thing to rectify. Be patient and someone can guide you or suggest what needs to be done to fix the problem.

Good luck!

Does it have an upper rack washarm?  If so the coupling in the back can wear and cause a noise something like you are describing.  It's a cheap part only a few $ and easy to replace, just snaps on the tube that runs up the back of the DW.

Thanks. Unfortunatley, we dont use the dishwasher nearly as much to where we would fix it. My dad will probably get rid of it and use the space for something else. Since were on septic, he thinks its ''Too much''. Pshhh. I very disagree. @washdaddy thanks for the advice. Machine hasnt ran since I posted this. I dought we will even fix it. @mattl nope. Its 27 years old, has one wash arm the maine bottom one. Theirs a little thing at the top thats supposed to be a little tiny spray jet with two holes which doesnt work at all. It doesnt get water to it or something? Anyway, the noise comes from the motor. Thanks for all the responses!

Washing dishes by hand uses a tremendous amount more water than using a dishwasher.  Typical "old folks" thought, unfortunately, that a machine uses more water.
