We just bought a home, built in the 1950's and it has the original wall-mount oven. It's beautiful, but it doesn't have a control for the heating - perhaps the thermostat is out/heating element is bad?! It just continues to heat up, regardless of what temperature you set it on...

What do I need to do first? We have never owned an antique or old stove like this. And, I'd like to do some diy before paying for someone to come out and take a look.

Thanks for any advice and suggestions!

If the thermostat is shot, since it's a Hotpoint (made by GE) you may be able to find a new replacement.

Wait for others to reply with their opinions.  They may be able to offer troubleshooting suggestions to make sure it's the thermostat that's causing the problem.

Yes it sounds like................

A bad thermostat. I have replacements if you need one. This model is from 1958 and I would suggest re wiring it too if you feel that enterprising and want to keep it for a long time.
