Help! Kdc17 dishwasher timer!

Hi there!
This site and forum is great! It helped my husband diagnose replace a faulty water valve. Appreciate all the knowledge and helpfulness of all the members here.

We got the kdc17 kitchenaid hobart dishwasher when we bought the house. Considered replacing it but this is hands down the best dishwasher we have ever used!! Hope to keep this beauty up and running! It really cleans anything you can throw at it!

So we now have an issue with the dishwasher flooding in the pre-rinse cycle. After a few minutes the basin will fill and flood out through the door. The pump/valve works to empty in the wash cycle so is my husband right to assume it's the timer?

If so where in the world can we find a timer?? Part number C-108740

Repair manual for your dishwasher

Beth-

If you go to the "manuals & literature" tab on this site you can download the service manual for the machine that you have. There is a cost for it but at least you'll have the exact manual to keep your dishwasher up and running at top notch.

You mentioned the timer and were possibly doubting it. that machine also has an overfill control switch in it- maybe that's the issue. I'm sure the manual will give you and your husband some direction.

Anyhow give that a shot or you could try touching base with either member "Stevet" or "Combo52" for guidance. Either one of those guys should be able to assist you if the manual doesn't pan out for your husband.

Anyhow, Welcome to AW.ORG. You'll find a great group of people here that always lend a hand when they can to help others collect, maintain, and keep things going.

<span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;">I don't know if your issue is the timer or not but I do know about that eBay person.  I'll leave the timer question to the experts.  However the suggestion of the overflow is also a good one.  The Service Manaul will describe how to clean it I think.  I just remember Steve saying to do it carefully with something like a Qtip minus the cotton at the end.</span>

 

<span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;">I have purchased two vintage dishwasher timers from that eBay person and had absolutely no issue.  He was great to work with.  As a matter of fact, on one of them I wasn't positive I was ordering the right one and asked him to send photos.  He did, he took pictures of the timer at every angle.   Lucky me it was the right one.  As far as I know these are all brand new OEM timers.</span>

 

<span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;">Great eBayer.   If you plan to keep this dishwasher around for a while it wouldn't hurt to get a timer if he has one becuase the price is so good and you never know when you'll need one.</span>

If the over-filling only happens after the pre-wash cycle and there are no issues during other fill sequences, I think that would rule out the float switch.

Hi all thanks for all the great information and direction on how to use this site.

Thanks for all the suggestions to fix the issue. Really appreciate it!

So I read on a former post within this site about cleaning out the hose and the hole opening in the basin that leads to the float switch. Our float switch hole (inside the basin where the arm is) was rusted over and filled with gunk and rust. It appears this was the issue. Cleaned that and the hose. Now the dishwasher appears to work without flooding!! Will run a couple of cycles and see what happens!

Isn't it satisfying when the fix is so easy?  Had the average person called a repairman, he'd not have even investigated and simply said it's not worth fixing.  That's their mantra these days.

KDC-17 Flooding

The timer alone CAN NOT cause flooding, the overfill pressure switch will stop overfilling is the timer is not advancing, it is also possible that the inlet valve is sticking open, more testing may need to be done.
