So my partner are I are in splitsville, and he gets the washer and dryer! Can anyone recommend a cheap, reliable, good set? I'd love vintage but doubt I have the time to search for it!
Help! Need a laundry set in a pinch!

- Top or front load?
- Define 'cheap' - give people a budget to work with as 'cheap' can mean $500 or $1000 depending on an individuals circumstances....

Sorry about the lack of specifics - can ya tell I'm a tad harried? Top or front load doesn't matter to me, I'm hoping to get a set and stay under $1,000, I could even be alright with line-drying for a while...if not perm. And, oddly enough, I've never had to purchase a washer before.

thats a great machine!!!
the one westie recommends. i have the set. the only one that had the depth and fit into my laundry closet. its efficient, washes well, does a great job, and priced at a value. btw it is made in the wascomat factories in the south... you cant go wrong with this one..

Sorry to hear of a fellow Texan having to go through a breakup, especially this time of year. There's a brand new adition to the Frigidaire line on sale at Sears for $389.99 and slightly larger capacity than the affinity above. Looks like introductory pricing. Nicely featurd machine for an entry-level front loader. This is part of a new line Frigidaire introduce almost a year ago.
Oh, and welcome, glad ya sought our advice. We're a nice group. And if ya need someone to talk to, we're all here to "listen" too.

Consider the BOL GE Top Loader
My BOL GE Top Loader (had it since 2004) is an inexpensive, reliable workhorse. It had been disparaged by some as a 'cheap, plastic, POS' but it just works. GE still makes it under their brand name and also as a Hotpoint. It can be got at Brandsmart for around $288.88. The matching dryer is good too. The washer does not have ATC (good), so you can get as hot a wash as you're willing to set your hot water heater. The capacity is now 3.4 cu. ft. (Mine's 3.2 -- good enough to do a king size set of sheets and pillow cases at the middle load-size setting.) The only thing about this machine is: DO NOT OVERLOAD IT!

You might consider the Admiral at Home Depot. It is made by Whirlpool and both the washer and dryer will run you less than $600.

And the same holds true for the Roper and Estate brand washers, all are Whirlpool under the covers.

I also vote for considering Admiral top load machines at Home Depot. Some say they can be rough on clothes, but I had few problems with a Kenmore variation on the theme I used nearly 10 years.

Sorry you aren't here in Hawaii. They have a blow out sale and have a Maytag set (washer 4.0/dryer 7.1 cu ft)for $369 ea. !!!!! I got two sets and have them being delivered Thursday.The store is HB (Hawaiian Builder's) and they are extremely competitive with Sears,HD and Lowes.I also saw a new Frigidaire Affinity set at Sears for $679 ea.But the Maytags are real nice and will be stacked side by side.Nobody here knows they're coming yet. HE he he!!
Frigidaire 2140 or 2940 -- 1,000 Times NO!!!!
I opened the link when I saw 3.5 cu ft capacity on the 2140/2940 washers. That is the same size as my dreadful Affinity. I say run away fast from either of those.
Trust me, the 2140/2940 will provide you with nothing but frustration, aggravation, and disappointment. Not to mention stinky towels unless you add a lot more water manually. Again, run away fast from such a pathetic excuse for a washing machine.
The newer Frigidaires that Bob has recommended are much improved according to what I've read in other threads here.
Another bit of advice: Avoid, if possible, any washer that has "auto temp" feature (they want you to think it's a good thing -- yeah, no) that cools down the hot water that you've paid to heat. Basically dumps your water heating dollars right down the drain for you. Try to find a washer that lets YOU decide how hot the wash water should be.
