Help Wanted ~Maytag & Admiral question.

Hello all, I need answers to a few questions here. I work on washing machines as a hobby and a biz and I mainly work on older stuff such as Kenmore, GE, and the like. Recently I have goten my hands on 2 very nice machines. One being an Admiral Mega 22 washer and the other being a Maytag Performa. Both of these machines worked just fine after I got them home to try out. They both were trade ins on used machines I sold to folks. I wondered why these people got rid of these machines considering they both worked just fine. Well to make a long story short, I sold both of the machines within a few days of each other and both were returned like clockwork about 7 days later. Both had stopped spinning out. Both machines will fill, wash and pump out just fine with no timer probs whatsoever but neither will go into snin. But at time of sale, both machines worked just fine across the board. So good that I was tempted to keep the Performa for myself. both are in mint condition. I talked to the local Maytag dealer here and he told me he would have to charger around 250.00 parts & labor on the Maytag. I told him he was silly as @#%$#%. But anyways, he said it was some bearing and some seal kit needed but I find this hard to imagine. Any Maytaggers out there who can tell me if there is a quick fix on this one or are these machines scrapyard bound?

You need to replace the main spin bearing underneath the wash tub. It is a B*tch to get at. I had much the same situation when I had my ill-fated appliance repair shop. I ended up giving the customer their money back as it was impossible for me to remove the fitting just above the spin bearing-I guess I am a weakling or something. These machines are not worthy of the Maytag name!

Thanks for your reply about the Maytag. The sad sad fact about these machines is that after I sold both of them, around 100.00 each, I had to refund the 100.oo on the Admiral and I had to go out and purchase a pretty GE for 50.00 to replace the Maytag. I got out cheap on that one. I had to buy this person the GE because I had sold out of all washers and they were crawling down my back for a refund. My Dad, who taught me all I know about appliance repair, long ago told me to stear clear of ALLLLLLLL Maytags. Father knows best. He hates them all. Has anyone ever had to go in and adjust the lid switch (double-action) type on a Maytag washer? Everytime I deliver one, I have to make an adjustment on the spot because the vibration of the delivery throws the damn things out of adjustment every time. I have begun to by-pass the switches nowadays.

Herrin built Performa & Atlantis washers use a stack up of various size washers and cams to lift and release the brake so the tub will spin. I have one in my workshop right now. I ordered a thrust bearing kit p/n 22002213. Seems they changed the setup a bit....possibly to alleviate the problem of a no spin complaint. I had been out to service this washer about a month ago for the same reason. There is a brake tool you must use to release and reset the brake spring. I thought that solved the problem, but it happened again a week ago. I sold them a direct drive Kenmore and took the Atlantis to fix. I will be fixing it tonight and let you know how it goes.

Installed the new thrust bearing kit and brake spring. They changed the stackup of washers to one steel washer with a collar and one ceylon plastic washer with a new pulley and cam. Ran a load tonite and all seems well.
