help with hoover dryer de luxe (D6008 i think)

Hi,

I've got an old dryer de luxe machine which i am trying to find some information on and struggling, so far this website seems to be the most helpful.

My dryer has all of a sudden started cutting out in the middle of cycles and i am trying to work out which part could be faulty. At first i thought it was the door sensor but everything looks ok.

So now i am wondering if it could be the thermostat but havent managed to locate it yet. Can anyone help me with where about the thermostat is in the unit, looking at this thread http://www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?17799 the internals seem to be indentical.

I would suggest that you start by cleaning out the dryer inside and check the fan belt to see if its stretched as that will slow the airflow and make the dryer too hot there are a couple of cutouts that will cut the power but am sure once you sort the fluff and possible belt you will have it up an running like new )

Hi Graeme.

I agree with Austin.

after decades of use, the fan belts on these machines can stretch over the years and once they are too slack, the air flow through the dryer is compromised.

The dryer will still operate and will still heat up - the problem is that there will be a poor or absent flow of cool air being drawn in through the back. The dryer will simply heat up the air inside it, essentially turning itself into a humid greenhouse and with no cool fresh air being drawn in and little or no heated air being expelled, the machine will reach an overheat point and cut out.

A new fan belt and a good clean out with a vacuum cleaner will return your machne to top form. The good flow of cool air being drawn in and warm damp air being forced out, will vastly improve its performance too.

There are two colours of fan belts - red or blue, with red being suitable for some models, whilst blue is aimed at the rest, so you will need to know your model number to get the correct one.

Fingers crossed a fan belt replacement will sort the issue, as you have an excellent dryer.

getting there

I can now confirm the model number is a D6008 and the fan belt was frayed in one part and definitely slack so I've got one ordered up a replacement from TDSpares.

It seems to not even fire up at all now but i did notice while the back was off that that when i shut the loading door the motor does twitch as if it's about to start so i am hoping the new belt will resolve the issue and it isn't something else as well.

fitted the belt

Hi,

I've changed the belt but it looks like there is a second problem, i can see the motor wheel is spinning but it seems the fan wheel is too stiff and the belt is staying put.

I can turn the fan wheel myself but it doesn't turn as easily as the fan wheel does. I am thinking if i turn the dryer so it is sitting on it's front and remove 4 screws securing the metal frame i might be able to get at the fan and see if there is anything restricting it's movement?

Is this the best way to access the fan and is there anything i should be aware of when i start taking out screws?

Hi Graeme

Yes your on the right track, put machine over on it's front.

Remove the 4 screws holding the fan unit to the back of the machine, there will be a thermostat on the air outlet, either remove the three wires or just remove the thermostat with the wiring intact, I think thats what I usually do, as the thermostat is only held in with a rubber gromet. The whole unit will lift away leaving the drum sitting behind, lift the whole drum out of the cabinet and you can give the cabinet and heating coils a clean out.

Going back to the fan unit, you will see a metal bracket with the stud that suports the back of the drum, this is rivoted over the fan encloser, this should make more sense when the machine is apart in front of you, these rivots need drilling out, so that section can be taken out, once off the fan can be with drawn from the bearing once the pulley has been removed, or you can unbolt the fan and push the shaft through with the pulley intacted.

The bearing is basically a tube with a bronze bush either end and a lint grease wick inbetween, and this lint wick gets threaded around the shaft and seizes the bearing, I would use some tweezers to remove this wick, grease the bearing and reassemble and if the bushes aren't to worn it should run well for a good while.

I hope that helps, it's certainly worth having a go at, I've been using one of these dryers along with the matching washing machine for many years since it's restoration and have found it very reliable and efficient dryer.

fan is fixed

Hi,

Thanks for all your help, ive taken the fan apart, cleaned it and greased it up and its turning nicely now.

I now have one minor issue.. the drum belt fell off when i put the dryer on it's front (i now realise i should have taped it). To make matters worse, in my attempt to put the belt back on, the metal bracket came off as well.

I think i have fitted the bracket back the way it was (it looks right when i compare it to the photos i took from above but as i didn't take any from underneath i cant be sure) however i can't get the belt to stay on, the minute i turn the drum manually it slips off.

Can anyone confirm how the belt should be positioned?

I have taken a picture of the motor from underneath and drawn where i have tried to fit the belt.
