How do I get the timer knob off of my '67 WCIL?

Sometimes difficult, but I think it just unscrews counterclockwise.

I tried that, but it sounds like gears stripping.

Hold the outer knob, while turning the inner knob counter clockwise.

there is no outer ring

this is the model where the dial you turn is offset (below) the timer indicator.

That's odd, the 1967 Tech Talk does not describe how exactly you remove that dial. Does it pull directly off the shaft?

You should be able to unscrew it by pulling it out onto the off position then turn it counter clockwise.

I tried that, but it just makes a grinding noise and I don't want to strip anything. I did however fix the problem I set out to do without removing the knob. I had to fix the light ballast. It was tight, but I was able to re-solder the winding back onto the terminal. I now have lights again.
