Hey, you Maytag experts! Question...

So, I acquired this minty Maytag set a while back. Over the Christmas holiday, I actually had some time to spend getting to know them.

First, the washer. AA608, serial 64099AG. She's pretty, but lacks the lighted control panel of her sister. Is it possible to transplant?

For your approval, we have dryer ADE808, serial 57973ZS. Now, HERE we have all the bells and whistles an appliance lover could ask for. She even chimes to get your attention--so much more pleasant that those awful buzzers of the Whirlpool make.

The DREAD avacado is not my favorite, to say the least. I have a delicious pair of sunny yellow Maytags in the garage awaiting work this summer. Stay tuned, I'm sure I'll be full of questions.

In the meantime, though, I'm well pleased with these girls. Next trip to the farm, I'll get into the washer. They appear to be very low-mileage, and dryer's sensor is right on the mark.

If one of you can date them for me, I'd much appreciate it.

Yeah, you can do a transplant. Several things to think about.....

If you can find a console from a post-1975 A806 of any color you can switch out the whole console as long as you carefully trace out all of the wires and make sure that everything matches up to the proper function. For that you will need the wiring diagram of the 806 and the 608.

You can also switch the guts out of this panel into a 806 panel.

Without pulling up a parts list I don't know if the opaque panels of the 608 can be switched out with the glass ones of the 806. I would suspect that they can. You will also have to consider the extra hassle of moving the fluorescent light holders and ballasts as well as figuring out how you will power the light as there is no contact on the 608 timer for the panel light. In this case you will need to either put in a separate switch for the panel light or wire it on a completely separate cord that you plug in and out.

Minty machines, and the up-and-coming Sunshine is a favorite Tag color.

My Whirlpool has the dreaded buzzer--such a horrid sound from an otherwise wonderful machine. Worse, sometimes it sticks, and the basement sounds like
Doctor Frankenstein's Laboratory. BZZZZZZZWAAAAAAAAAHHHHH......

So Keith, are you all Maytag or just part?

Hey Keith, Along with what Mark was saying....

Look at this light from Home Depot. It's in the kitchen remodeling section--an under-counter light, if memory serves, just under 20 bucks, maybe less.

Like you I wanted to light up the 62 Custom Deluxe Multimatic. Now, I have no idea what's behind the Maytag panel, but the company is so efficient who knows. When I opened up the Frigi, there were no sockets as there are in the lighted Custom Imperial, but this light in the pic below fit perfectly, so I sealed her in, keeping the cord outside, fitting snugly under the back panel. I simply plug it in when I want lights. Perfect and easy solution,

Maybe you could do the same thing.

As for appliance genes, I'm mostly Westy, blended with a good helping of Whirlpool, and I've only lately come into the Maytag automatic fold. The lovely sunshine set came from Travis, and they're about the prettiest things I've ever looked upon.

They are, however, VERY old, and may require the attention of someone with more skill than me.

The Maytag panels for non 806/906 machines were a complete cast piece of pot metal with either painted panels and chrome finish on the edges, or painted panels with a paint finish on the edges.  The white 'painted' areas of the panel are not removable as the assembly is 1 complete casting.

 

Unfortunately Keith, if you want to go lighted, you'll need to change the whole panel out with an 806 panel.  It is done fairly easy by just pulling the whole harness and panel from an 806 as one, and install it on a 2 speed donor machine like yours.  I've done similar swaps in the past and it isn't too bad.  You'll want to retain the 806 timer as well as it will feed the florescent starter line voltage as soon as an active cycle has been selected.
