John told me more than 25 years ago that square cut gears are responsible for that high-pitched whine. What a sound!

The low-speed was one of the background sounds on "The Outer Limits". Low budget, but fun. Nowadays, the GE MRI equipment makes the same sound as I was surprised to discover last year.

That high-speed sound is priceless!
Funny how once that sound was synonymous with "laundry", and I took it for granted. Now it really gets my attention.

Hi Jon Charles. I remember the Philco Bendix coin ops at the local laundromat with their slow spins, then during the final spin, just like your machine, it would suddenly go into high
speed spin.

One of our neighbors had one of those Bendix washers, but I can't remember who it was now. I just remember that when I was a little kid, that noise was scary. I could scarcely bring myself to go out in their garage while it was running, for fear that it might kick into that high speed spin.
