High iron content water, help please!

I'm in Mt. Carroll, IL for a few more weeks and I have a problem. The water supply here was recently changed and the new supply has a high iron content. All of my whites are now turning a dingy yellow! I've been using powdered Cheer Original and some Borax. I've also used some bluing. Unfortunately, my whites which were once the color of this text box's background are now the color of the yellow Super Forum background, or darker.

What can I do about this? Every time I wash, there's more and more yellow. This has all happened over the past 4 weeks.

ONE THING-

Do not use chlorine bleach. It will set the iron.

Go get some Super Iron-Out. Follow directions to the letter.

Look For A Product Called "Iron Out"

It is designed for removing iron stains from laundry. Though it can also bleach colours so test and use carefully.

Maytagbear is correct: do not use chlorine bleach with high iron content water, it will make things worse.

If you cannot find "Iron Out" try and find a local commercial laundry supply, and ask if they will sell you products to deal with high iron content water. There are so many, but you may have to order it in a very large container.

Another product you can try is "No More Yellow" by Whink Products Co. of Eldora, IA. You should be able to find it at any grocery, hardware, or big box store. Whink is noted for its rust stain fighting products.

You may have to talk to your water treatment company. I know Culligan has a iron filter they can install with their softeners that will remove Fe.

But hey look at it this way, you won't have to take iron tablets if you drink the water.

I second the "No More Yellow." It easily removes iron stains from white clothing that have been set by chlorine bleach.

A friend of ours bought a beachfront condo in Florida. When his wife washed their white towels (first load in place) the towels came out ORANGE! She was horrified to say the least!
The called Calgon and had a filter put in to remove the iron. It wasn't all that expensive, either.
