I know this is off-topic but without internet where would we be? I`m on dialup thru my local telephone office. I went with them because its just added to my phone bill. The first 6 months were fine, then they changed providers and the price went up. Now I have a lot of trouble geting on at night and I`m thinking about a dsl. The phone company had one for 49.95 per mo but they just increased it to I think 69.95. I was wondering if any of you would recomend an isp for me to check out. Any help or input appreciated. Don

Is cable TV available where you live? See if they offer High speed Internet. Competition is fierce, and they may have a better deal. DSL also depends on the distance from the central office, and may not be available in your area.

$69.99 for DSL is absolutely astronomical. Especialy when you consider that most DSL providers are fighting right now for each other's business. The lowest price I have seen is $19.99. I personally have a cable modem and hope I never have to be without it. Our cable connection is $44.95 and that's considered high. Basically, if you have the option of many providers, check into download speed and price. Choose the one that is most economical and gives you the highest DLUL speed. DSL is a tad bit slower than Cable, but when it comes to going from Dial-up to broadband, the difference is so astronomical I don't think you would notice much LOL. I truly hope this helps.

$70 For DSL?

We have DSL for $29.99 per month (Verizon)with one month free. Self install, but that wasn't a problem. Only "hassle" is one must be able to bill the monthly charges to a major credit card rather than phone bill, and have to sign up for a one year contract.
Found the first part of the above strange, but then found out that even though Verizon supplies the DSL, that division is somewhat separate from the phone company. When you bill non phone services to your phone bill and do not pay, it gets forward to collections, but they cannot turn off your phone service as long as you pay the actual telephone charges. This is how it is in our state at least.
So far am liking DSL, and if one has children, they quickly feel "left out" of their set if they are the only ones without a high speed connection. With so much on the Internet these days in large files, (web sites, pictures, picture/file/music/etc sharing) it almost becomes a necessity to have some sort of high speed connection.
Their is a website called "Broadband.com" (think that is the url), which lists all DSL providers for the United States, and has various forums and stuff (much like THS) where people exchange rants, ideas, problem solving etc.

We only have 1 cable service. A company operating under Charter Comm. They charge 45.00 for basic so I dont have cable. If I want to watch tv I go to my parents. My phone bill (no long distance) with dialup is 32.00 so if I could get a dsl for around 25.00 I would be happy. Theres no competition in my aera so thats what keeps prices high.
The next choice would be Satillite.

If you don't watch videos on the internet, or do things that transfer huge amounts of data, a dial-up may be ok. I have been using access 4 less for a couple of years. It has unlimited usage for $5.95 per month. It is perfect for checking e-mail and that sort of thing. This site sometimes takes longer if the thread contrains photos, those do take a while to load.
I had a problem originally with connecting to the site, and I had to set my computer to dial it, their dial-up software didn't seem to work. But other than that it has been a great connection for me. They do offer free e-mail, but I always recommend that people use hotmail or another service, then if you change your isp you don't have to change you e-mail address.
I usually am connected at 50 k to 46 k and there are numerous numbers here in Sacramento, you can check the availability in your area by going to their site. If the numbers are long distance for you, that can make a big difference.

They probably charge $45 for basic CABLE coverage, which has nothing to do with what they charge for High Speed Internet (though often companies will give discounts if you have cable TV and high speed Internet.)
