Hi guys ….I just picked up some really cool machines…They were downtown in the old casino area of Las Vegas..The 1964 pink set I believe belonged to Marlene Detrich or Sammy Davis ,,,I mean who else would have pink.. oh gross.. They are how ever in all most perfect shape inside and out ..

sears kenmore maybe 1963 or 64

Dont quite know what year,,,,they are a nice pair, i believe they are candy pink …any knowledge would help. they must have come out of a hotel penthouse for hardly used..and who else would own these pink show girls … they look like maybe used 100 times than sat for 45 years ..strange low miles for sure.. the plug looks like it is still wrapped together from factory with a heavy duty plastic tie that looks old too.??????????

Congratulations on your finds!  I think you have discovered a new path to forgotten machines.  I am thinking of the now gone Frontier, Stardust and so many others.  The digs for the high rollers or the storage area's of casino's as the high roller Penthouses were remodeled.  Who knows what is still in storage and long forgotten.  Clever...     A

1964 Lady Kenmore pair

These would be the last year of Pink Laundry appliances from Sears, you found a very rare pair and in great condition.

 

If you post the serial#s we can tell you exactly what week and year these were built, even though they are 64 models they could have been built in late 63, in fact the dryer has the early build heater box.

Looking forward to legible photos of the control panels.  Don't think I've ever seen this year of LK washer in person.  The dryer?  I think so.  Is the Highlander a 2-speed model?

Gas 1964 LKM Dryer

The auto-dry system on this dryer was a neat setup, you can see from your picture with the back panel removed some of the parts of the adjustable dryness control.

 

This dryer has a modulating 37,000 BTU gas burner and the auto-dry thromostat [ located under the dome at the bottom of the heater box ] closes when the input heat from the gas burner has modulated to a low enough point, this then turns the timer motor on and advances the timer through a cool down period and the dryer shuts off.

 

This round about system worked really well, the only adjustment that the user ever needed to make was an adjustment on the back of the dryer in the unlikely event you did not like the factory setting. There was also a little lever on the left side of the control console that said MAXIMUM AUTO DRY    ON    OFF if you selected on the auto dry thromostat had to stay satisfied for a much longer period of time to get the the timer into cool-down, this setting was recommended for hard to dry items like sleeping bags, pillows etc.

 

Over all these are very cool machines that work great, we have a pair in turquoise in our museum collection. In 1965 when the 65 LKMs came out the 65 LKMD was the first dryer WP ever built with a fully electronic dryness system and for a few months they built 1964 style LKMDs with this same EDS, out turquoise 64 LKM gas dryer is the electronic model.

pink washer and dryer

Hey guys I started the dryer and it lit up and started to turn ..it quieted down allmost like a quiet purr..It works fine .it has a little hole in door for some chemicle or something. As you can see i need a lens for the lite panel..mark in az

The pink kenmore serial number is 03478c345….model 6404900600 stock 4410………….i have another weird kenmore which i have never seen one …model 7004406 serial j15234783 stock 20400 they both look almost the same cabinet and motor etc its strange..

I'm not absolutely certain on yours, but Kenmore had a few center timer consoles around 1969, or '70.
The year is in the model number. I think the second two if memory serves.
My dad serviced for Sears back then.

I believe that the hole in the door of the dryer in reply #6pic #1 is for water. I remember from other threads I think that was the method back them for wrinkle release or steam on new dryers. I am sure others will chime in on the proper usage and dial setting.

The second Kenmore...the white one

Is a 1970 400 series model. Built in the St. Joseph, Michigan plant the last week of 1971, in between Christmas and New Year. Sears did indeed have center dial consoles in some models in the 1968-1972 production period. Fellow member and friend James/70-Series and I have counted at least 12 specific models to use that basic center dial console frame. We know there were a few more.

The serial on the pink Kenmore washer seems to date it to the 45th week of 1963. The cabinets on 1960 to 1986 Kenmore belt-drives were all quite similar, though the gauge of metal got a little thinner at least once in 1978/9 or so, maybe several times over the years. The use of the square non-repairable motors in the early 70s started to make the newer models look different from the older machines, mechanically.

Water in door

This feature was to sprinkle clothes to be ironed. You filled the door, put in dry clean clothes , set the timer on Air only then shut the door and hit start. If you waited too long to hit start , you got a very wet spot because the water started sprinkling (really just a stream of water) as soon as the door closed. Jeb.

Does the cabinet come off pretty easy on my 1963..I would like to do a thorough cleaning and basic replace the hoses etc ..Im in arizona and like las vegas our rubber gets hard and old…the machine has a plastic filter like pump on the bottom of machine when you shake it it sounds like 100s of rocks in it…the machine underneath looks like its brand new ..I touched the cardboard cover on the motor and it felloff ..I usually wash them clean spray with vinal restorer and clean the contacts and than try to start them… The hose to the tub is cracked so i m replacing that one I dont see a tub lite and that is disappointing …from the looks of things the cabinet lifts off the square base when the top bolts are released… thanks guys

Removing cabinet

Actually, I hate to say, the cabinet can't be removed. Everything in the machine anchors to it. The machine can be disassembled to the point of gutting the cabinet, but everything needs to be removed piece by piece to get that far.

This is not a hugely difficult job, especially on a low mileage machine that will come apart easily, but it's a lot of work. Unless there are major repairs needed to the baseplate, I would not suggest taking the machine that far apart just for cleaning.

The lint filter does have 100s of marbles in it! It is supposed to sound like that, so no worries there.

Back on the cabinet removal....actually you could disengage the suspension rods from the three corner gussets, but you will have to support the entire machine center or it will fall to the floor on the motor and gearcase. Taking it apart piece by piece is much safer.

Good News

Hi guys i got some energy up and hooked up the water. I did however take off the water valve , cleaned and oiled it.. I turned it on and the water filled up and shut off.. Then it started to wash on a high speed..it did leak when it was pumping out so i have a leak somewhere.. The pump worked fine and drained ..when it came time to spin it was frozen so i turned it and it started to run .. It needed a little help now its spinning fine… it does run with the lid up so i dont know why there is a switch…there does not seem to be a lite in the tub..I wish there was..I will keep you posted to let you know…It seems to be all fine i just need to clean replace some hoses and oil everything. wow im starting to enjoy this ,machine and it is a completely different machine than a may tag. if everything goes well ill build a big laundromat to house my collection.. Im thinking a I 18 machine with a window in poppy red ...
