I was at my desk, minding my own business and waiting for a conference call from Scott who is the buyer for Sam's Club.We had a great conference and are in the final stages of being available on their website(samsclub.com)under the "Galaxy" name brand. After our successfull conference, my boss,Atul asked me what I would think about relocating to Hawaii.I asked him what on Earth would have him ask me that question and he said that the owner of one of our loyal buyers there(Propane for Change)had spoken to me numerous times asking for assistance in how to repair a combo washer dryer or refrigerator questions. I was able to be of assitance and send him the correct parts. There was a customer who had severe issues with our service and I was able to remede the problem. They in turn went to Propane for Change and spoke to Dan the owner about my help to them and he evdently called my boss(unbenounced to me)and said nothing but praise to him about my customer service and product knowledge. His call today was to tell Atul,my boss,he wanted to know what it would take to release my duties from here at Equator to their company in Hilo where I would get a beautiful 2 bedroom 2 bath hut on the beach and go to work(2 miles from home all uphill)on the beach with 10 acres of land and 4 horses of his to ride anytime, anywhere on the island or beach! My sallary would include me rent and because the home is set up for solar and wind power, there is no electric bill!I am waiting for him to download photos of the home and business. I am still pinching my face to see if this is real!!They had spoken to me a few months back and offered me almost the same thing but, this time, they're including the air fair!I am being fitted for my grass scurt as I speak! lol

Sounds great, Chuck....

It really does.

However...get it ALL in writing.

I hope it is everything you hope, and more wonderful than that!

However, get it in writing.

You Know Best -

- What your salary is, but you should know that it will probably not go as far in HI as it does where you are. Many things are unbelievably expensive because everything has to be brought from the mainland. My other half went to HI on a job transfer in the 1980s, and came back after less than two years. because his comfy mainland lifestyle was taking a beating on the islands, due to the cost of living.

Maybe you could go for a week's vacation to scope things out?

Hilo is wonderful. Very wet, busy (at least the downtown area, which isn't big), and more than a little homophobic, but otherwise it's paradise IMO. Hopefully you love the rain, especially at higher elevations you're going to get it just about every day.

If I was moving there I'd live in Puna District. It's a short commute to Hilo, and a lot less crowded (and a lot more progressive, socially).

I have contact with Pete, the owner ,daily and ,being one of the only appliance distribution companies on the "Big Island",business has been very good for them.I just had a shipment of 163 refrigerators shipped out to him and all but 55 are already sold. The pay I was offered is almost 3 times what I make now and includes medical/dental/optical coverage,401K, my rent for the house and any gas usage/mileage I aquire on the dirtbike.Groceries are also included. They have luals sometimes twice a week and there's an upright freezer in my kitchen. So,I'm sure I won't be starving anytime soon. When I arive and Pete and I discuss all the details and I have it in writing, I'll let you know what's what.I need to get all of Bear's shots updated(Bear is my fabulous Pomeranian)otherwise, they'll quarentine him for 6 months AAAAAAHHHH!!!!!Petsmart has a good program now where they give rabies shots mon-fri for $18.99.

With snow on the ground and the temperature in the low 20s (Fahrenheit) I am ready for Hawaii also! LOL

BTW, I had a Pomeranian several years ago and his name was also Bear. He wasn't your normal size Pomeranian however, he was about the size of a terrier (the breeder swears he was purebred but I have my doubts), blonde in colour and everyone thought he looked like a fox with his thick bushy tail. I used to keep him trimmed as short as possible because he was always so hot. In the winter time he would go outside just before I was ready for bed and lay in the snow, just outside the range of the outside light so that I couldn't see him. Then I would be calling and calling for him to come in and sometimes would have to get dressed and go outside to get him. It is funny when I think of it now but it wasn't at the time.

I'd make sure I have a guarantee of employment for 6+ months or whatever Hawaii requires to get you unemployment should things sour.

One might also want to consider getting an allowance of some sort to haul your @$$ (and your material possessions) back to the mainland if they let you go.

GAWD FORBID! KNOCK ON WOOD!

Air fair

I need to google search for the best air fair available from here to Hilo,Ha and back.I had a great conference with Pete earlier and it looks like I'm hired! He wants me to come over and spend at least a week there to see if I'll like it.If I do,he recomends that I get all my "sh-t"and have my company pay to have it shipped over there. From what he explained, there will be plenty to do. He overheard of my previous position with Direct Maytag and how I would go there on my days off with machines I got at the local junkyard and rebuilt for resale.I told him how I'd be out on our deck in shorts and a tanktop with a bandana around my head stripping a DD Wpool/Kmore and spraying a presure hose into the cavity of their matching dryers. Replacing all the seals, belts, pumps hoses and 220 volt cords. He said that ther's a dump nearby where I would probably have a field day. That if that was my passion,he'll be sure that whatever I need to be able to do that will be there.
