Hobart/KitchenAid KDSM-21A won't stop draining

Howdy all, nice forum here.
I have this model and it gets stuck at the draining stage.
In my circumstance currently, if you hit the cancel button, it goes through all stages (tore into it and watched the mechanical controller spin) and it stops during the 'drying' cycle, and kicks on the draining motor- and it does not stop.

I'm guessing a bad float switch, or overflow switch? Been searching around without much luck, and it sounds like you guys know a thing or two about these old machines that still work great!

Exactly, what happens?

At first glance, it looks like the timer is sticking as you have desribed. However, does the machine work properly in all the regular cycles and only acts up when you use the cancel/drain cycle?

If it works fine, at least you can still use the machine. My timer sometimes burps when it comes time to open the detergent dispenser and will not always reset properly if I use the cancel/drain cycle. I have to wait til it gets to the dry portion and hit normal or another button for it to continue to the end of that cycle and then it sets up to reset properly. It seems like the internal parts of the timer do not move the main cam in the proper increments and the contacts don't always make contact and in your case, it stalls and in my case, misses things it should be doing.

Except for the deteregent door problem which is intermittent, everything works fine and the dishes always came out clean.

See if you can get it to stop draining and advance to off by pushing another cycle button when it stalls. Let us know.

Well, when I would start it (Normal mode) it would start a cycle (I think it would take in water) but then go no further. Checked the float switch, it was fine.

I could hit cancel, and it would then mechanically go all the way through stages (quickly), like it should.

That's about the time I decided that this good partner has done me well, but he's ~25 years old, and maybe he should hand off the duties of clean plates to the younger generation.

So, on that note, I'll disassemble him and part him out. I don't know what's wrong with him though.

The heater is spoken for, but the rest is up for grabs- just pay shipping and I'll send out what I can easily take off. Not guaranteeing that I can fulfill all requests (if there are any!) It's the black model.
I'm in the DFW area if someone wants the whole thing (minus heater...)

Hold Everything!

This may seem kind of strange to ask, but do you have any idea how this machine works?

In all the wash cycles,except for rinse and hold, the machine fills up and then stops to heat the first fill of water to approx 140 degrees. The heat light should be on and if you listen closely, you should hear the water heating in the sump of the machine.
If the heat light is on and you don't hear anything going on inside the tank, then your heating element could be bad or maybe a wire or two fell off below when you were transporting it.
When the preheat thermostat is satisfied, the machine will then continue thru its selected cycle, hopefully without a problem.
The float switch does nothing more than protect the machine from overfilling and flooding your floor.

If that preheat thermostat is never satisfied, the machine WILL just sit there and do nothing more but wait and wait.

So before you part it out, see what is going on and go from there. That machine is a keeper.You will regret getting rid of it.

Your timer has two motors on it, one normal speed [ slow advance ] and one rapid advance motor for selecting cycles and for fast cancelling of a cycle, I would bet that the normal speed motor is bad, you either need a complete timer or if you can find just the timer motor you can change just the motor. I would have good used timer motors for this DW if you want to fix it.

SteveT- thanks Steve, yes, I know of the pre warm and its cycles. It's acting semi-correct, but odd at the same time. It just seems stuck where ever it is, so, that makes me think that combo52 might have the answer.

When Cancel is hit, it moves along nicely. This second slow motor may be the key.

I think I'll take it apart and check on the condition of its condition- see if I can notice anything about the low-speed motor.

Check these motors out,

Before you take your timer apart.

I have the two motors that came off of a KDS19 timer which may fit your timer and the both work fine.

The Singer stock numbers are as follows:
414-268-20 115v 60hz 2-2/3 rpm ccw
and 417-231-20 115v 60hz 6 rpm ccw

See if they match what your timer has and that way you won't have to delve into the innards! That can be disasterous sometimes!

You guys have been the best at helping a new guy- due to the not being able to futz with it currently, the project is over.

I do have a timing unit (KDS19), complete, probably with one of the motors being bad.

I'd like to send it to one of you guys that has helped me, if it can help you.

So, I guess, who ever is first with a reply? Or if one of you knows another needs it? We will figure out the address/etc after.
