Have a N50 Hobart that I use very infrequently. The other day when I was baking "the cheese straws" I removed the bowl and there was a clear motor type oil sitting in the basin that houses the mixing bowl...anyone know if that machine is full of that type of oil? There were about three tablespoons of this goop, it was clear but thicker than a vegetable oil.

From a Hobart tech on Fixya:

Some of the N50's were packed with a white grease. It tends to seperate. So the oil portion finds it's way out. It sounds like it is getting into the motor case, and is running down the inside of the column. Hobart now uses a brown clay based grease --- Darina 2.

If the amounts are small, and the mixer is not excessively noisy, I wouldn't be concerned. If you wanted to fix it, the transmission would need to be removed, cleaned, and repacked. For a Hobart tech, 3 hours labor, $45 grease, plus parts.

Jeff, that is exactly what has happened. The white grease ran down the inside column. When I turn it on, it is not quiet but does not sound terrible. I am going to take your advice and find a tech to look at it. I know the Hobart shop in Atlanta will not allow walk in service. I will have to have a friend that owns a restaurant have it sent in.

Thanks for the post, it truly solved the mystery. When I took the bowl out of the hopper and saw that I did not know what to think.
