More Random Thoughts

Quick peek at Google Maps shows the property is just off Route #46, easy as pie to get to if one is anywhere near northern New Jersey or central for that matter.

OTHO not all pictures shown on the estate sale's website are from this particular do, can't be, but long as the stuff is there who cares?

As for the larger appliances (washer, Roper range, etc...), Google Maps shows a small shed/garage structure at the back of the property, but it looks too modern and small to hold all the stuff shown in various estate sale pictures. Given that the house was built in 1932 that stonework seen in the background *may* very well be the home's foundation. In which case all that stuff is in the basement/cellar and would have to be hauled up and out of the house by either the front or back door. Besides just cannot imagine anyone storing (or using for that matter) those washing machines in a garage given NJ's winter climate).

Though the property is quite big (largest on that side of the block from what one can see), the house is small as with most in that area. If it get's crowded (and it very well may given it's a built up area and local residents are bound to wander in), things will be tight. My advice for anyone thinking of going is to do so early and perhaps on Saturday for best selection and "quiet" shopping.

Asking Ain't Getting

Sellers make a big deal on their website about how hard they work to get the best prices for their clients and so forth.

Being as that may cannot see anyone spending >$100 for those appliances much less >$200. Sale only runs two days and then what happens to the *stock* is anyone's guess.

If you live in the area I'd stroll over and make your best offer and see what happens. If those washers don't move by Sunday afternoon (and am guessing they won't)seller might see the light.

Anyone Make The Trek?

As for myself though the spirit was willing the flesh was weak. Twas a cold morning with light snow and ice falling which did not inspire one to drive out into NJ. Besides given how much BrianL reported the sellers wanted for the washers one had the feeling bargins may have been few and far between.

Yes

Made the trek to NJ.
The main goal of this trip was to deliver some furniture in Cherry Hill, east of Philly, the sale was an added bonus. In order to get there before it ended on Sunday it had to be the first stop, so the van was already fully loaded. Took the northern route across PA and arrived about 1PM. Lots of people there and still a lot of stuff in the house. Very small house.
Stayed for quite a while but had to get on the road again. Did buy a few small things as couldn't leave empty handed. Will share later.
The washers and the basement stove were still unsold when I left. And, there apparently was a lot not offered for sale as no room to display. Lots of jewelery yet to be shown. Was told that the sale will be on again this coming weekend for the remainder.
They were taking offers on the washers and stove so there is still hope that someone can adopt them.

Estate Liquidators

As luck would have it there was an article in last weekend's WSJ about dealing with the estate of a deceased loved one and using liquidators.

Most if not all such persons running these sort of sales work on a percentage of total receipts. Thus the more things fetch the more they make.

Cannot imagine how anyone got that range into the basement (but glad to see one's hunch was correct), much less the washers. Unless there is some sort of door directly to the cellar it's going to be quite a *haul* to get those items up and out. Am guessing at one point the range came apart for shipping/installation, but after sitting unused and rusting away in that basement getting it apart without damage is going to be no easy feat.

Also made a swing past this weekend. There is a side door about halfway up the basement stairs. It'd be hard nut not impossible to get the stove out.

I saw no evidence of automatics... Both washers looked as if they'd not been used for a while.

Wanted $95 for the Mixmaster, which I declined. Sheesh.

Also, basement was MOLD CITY.

Ridgewood Sale Has Been Rescheduled

As per website.

Anyone who wants either of those washers or (what ever for?) the range should IMHO contact the liquidators and state your case up front; as a seasoned appliance collector and restoration person you are highly placed to give *your* estimate of value and are willing to pay "X" max. Furthermore if they want the stuff moved simply agree and you will arrive with funds and the required equipment to shift the stuff. End of story.

While the Mixmaster and other household contents can be packed into boxes and shifted about for offering at other sales or even on eBay those mouldering appliances aren't going any where. The only persons willing to pay $200 or whatever insane price these people are asking are scrappers, and even they try to get things for free or on the cheap.

As Grand-mama used to say " a little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing".

Mind you if one goes this route then you have to man-up and follow through. And please don't all and sundry go running over to the seller and tell her/him about his site...... That's how people get an idea into their head that the tired old tat in their basement or shed is a goldmine to begin with. *LOL*

Modern Washers

Well either the elderly couple or persons living in that house sent their laundry out or a family member/estate liquidator got shot of the *good* stuff before the sale.

Cannot imagine anyone that on in years using either of those washers, especially with evidence of a walker/potty chair in the background. *LOL*

Again there is a modern range shown in one of the kitchen photographs so it's not like they were totally living in the 1940's.

Wonder if the two sewing machines sold?
